In the early years of the economic crisis suicides came to the fore in Greece. It was reported by the mass media, from the House of Representatives, and the issue seemed to have taken on national tragedies that competed with the deaths of traffic and smoking. But is that the way things are or was it in a situation that did not change just that some people threw the projector up?

According to the latest data from the World Health Organization , recently published and relating to 2015, that is the year when the crisis was at its peak, Greece is in the last place in Europe with regard to suicides.

numbers The figures on the map that record suicides per 100,000 inhabitants show that Lithuania is the champion of suicide with 21.1 deaths, followed by Belarus (19.1) and Poland (18.5 )

The opposite is Greece, which is also shown by the above table of the World Health Organization, which has not shown significant fluctuations in recent years.

As the experts say, economic reasons are low on the list of causes that can lead someone to suicide. It is no coincidence that Jamaica is in the last places, while Japan and South Korea, two of the richest countries on the planet, are the first to take.

Worth knowing about suicides

95% of suicides could be prevented! Activating his relatives, relatives and friends in a potentially selfish way can really be life-saving. At a time when suicide tends to become a "culture," knowledge and recognition of warning signs and symptoms can save lives. So what should we do and what NOT to DO if we understand or suspect someone that he has suicidal tendencies:

  • Always take seriously the self-destructive comments. When a person says he is thinking of suicide, we must always treat these comments seriously. The assumption that this man only seeks our attention is a very serious and potentially destructive mistake.

  • You need to learn as much as possible about what he is thinking. The more he has planned his actions, the more risk he runs. If this person has designed the method and the time is then at an extremely high risk, so do not hesitate to call 1018 and ensure that this person will get help from mental health experts. Talk openly about suicide and ask him if he feels so bad when you think of suicide?

  • Allow him to express his feelings the way he wants. Try not to be shocked. The man is already very distraught, and if he discerns your agitation, it may be adversely affected. Stay calm and talk to him. Let him cry, shout and do what is necessary for him to release his feelings. But do not allow him to become violent or hurt himself. Use encouraging phrases. Remember that intense emotional pain can be overwhelming, so be as polite and supportive as possible. Tell him you're worried about him. A self-defeating person is vulnerable and needs to feel your interest.

  • Do not try to help this person on your own. Make sure you follow a doctor and mental health specialist. A self-defeating person needs help from mental health professionals. Do not allow improperly trained people to act as the only counselors of this person.

  • Before you let this person alone make sure they have received mental health assistance or that the risk of suicide has passed. You can not leave it until the risk passes, or until it is treated. A man with suicidal ideation is at risk every moment. Make sure you take the appropriate steps to help him before leaving him alone.

  • If this person owns a gun and speaks to you about his intention to use it, his access to it must be ruled out immediately. Guns are used in many cases and usually those who use them as a suicide do not survive. This is an emergency that needs to be addressed immediately.

  • If someone tells you to keep secret his suicidal intentions, remember that you can not keep this secret. Under no circumstances can you keep a secret that can cause someone to die. You do not violate a privileged communication and take the necessary steps to prevent a suicide. This is an expression of love, care, and serious concern and the only choice in a situation as serious as it is.

This is such an important issue - thanks for raising it and posting about it.

From memory what I saw reported about Greece was that there was a rise in suicide rate, not that it was somehow the worst in Europe.

Have you found anything about the rates between men and women?
In Australia, the vast majority of suicide cases are male, and the rates are horrific!
