Of course, we struggle with motivation.

You get a sudden insight into a NEW project, and it feels exciting.
But something else gets triggered: Anxiety.
You'll grab something to eat, calm the anxiety, and suddenly realize your drive to create (to hunt) is gone.

You can make anxiety work for you.

For the past 13 years, I have paid attention to this phenomenon and drew up some conclusions:

Creative Work = Hunting

The act of coming up with a new solution is itself satisfying
But it can also trigger fear because:

what if we fail?

It's not necessary to act on EVERY idea.

Because imagining a project stimulates our imagination.
It won't feed your body, but it will sharpen other parts of you.
It's OK to only act on 10 or 1% of the ideas we get.

It doesn't (really) matter which idea you act on.

Why do we get so sad when we fail to act on an idea. It seems as if we assume that the result would be as rewarding as the insight itself.
(But we can't know that.)

Creativity is about growth.

In my life, the result of creating something has always been entirely unexpected and gratifying.
It seems as if our bodies knew where valuable information is hiding. That is why we are suddenly very driven to pursue a path.
Lastly, If I follow and act on that intuition, I grow noticeably, and new doors open up.

All forms of growth are the "same."

(In so far as dealing with complexity.)
Creating Order out of the Chaos is a skill that translates to every area of your life.

Panic and anxiety is the default reaction.

But you can train yourself to use them in your favor.

Take the following story:

Imagine you are learning how to hunt, and you spot an animal. Since this experience is somewhat unfamiliar, you might panic and feel anxious. But that rush of energy is necessary to focus on the task at hand because it allows your body to ignore everything else which is irrelevant. That means you have a lot of resources gathered to get that done.

PS: Here is what this article is about:

  1. Creative Work seems to trigger an anxiety response.
  2. Handling anxiety with food may cause the insight to lose power
  3. Black Coffee is an excellent way to suppress your hunger and focus. (Please note that depending on your genetics and particular situation, skipping breakfast may be a wrong decision. Listen to your body)
  4. Creative endeavors teach you how to observe and interact with the world. You do this to invoke Order out of Chaos.
  5. The ability to create Order from Chaos translates to all other domains of life.
