Alternative image uploading service

in #image8 years ago (edited)

Hey everyone!

Lately I've been getting contacted by a few Steemians asking how they can remove their images from older posts. For some users this has caused a lot of problems and legal issues, there was someone a while back who was also at risk of getting fired from their job cause they had uploaded an image on a post that was beyond the payout and he couldn't edit out the image on it. This is now probably the 6th time someone has contacted me about this.

As you know Steemit uses AWS to upload images through the drag and drop feature onto steemitimages. This is just a service for hosting the images, it's not a front-end that allows you to edit your images or remove them if you like at a later point. It's also known that under almost no circumstance can a user remove the images from there since I believe there is no easy way of doing that. In future hardforks we might be able to edit posts older than 7 days but until then there is not much we can do.

There are other services that give you more leeway though, might not be something for the lazy who just want to drag and drop and be done with it, but for security reasons it might be a good alternative in case you have to remove those images in the future. As we know the blockchain only saves text so the images that you see on posts are just links to the images. A service I've used for years prior to Steemit is called Imgur. Other similar ones work as well of course.

On Imgur, if you create an account and log on to it, it will let you upload images and they will be visible on your account in folders and albums. If the time comes where you must remove an image from your posts, you just access your Imgur account and remove the image within or request the team at imgur to remove an image from a link in case it was not saved on your account but quickly uploaded onto the site directly. The latter might be harder to do that's why I advice you do the former on controversial images which you are not sure you want to have visible on the blockchain forever.

This means that the link will still be on your older posts that can't be edited, but the image won't show and the link won't work.

Hope this helps some of you out there!

Stay safe, Steemians!

You can still use https://imgbb.com it as thesame function as the above, you can create account with them and upload your files, they also support different links direct html, direct view and many others should be quite helpful and the best part is that it is free, no charge for storage.
Although don't know if the free storage is limited to certain amount of space.

This is a good alternative to Imgur, but both websites provide you with pretty much the exact same result; free long-term storage and display of your images.

exactly, that they do

I’m going to try this now. I’m new to steemit but ran into the problem above already, so I’m going to try this method from now on

ok great glad I could help

I use imgbb a lot.

wow great same as me

With my knowledge of the security behind the Blockchain technology which is cryptography, I knew that any thing posted on steemit stays forever. This is why I use my personal unlimited storage mobile site to host my pictures because whenever I wanna remove it.. It becomes easy. Just delete the source file.

Yeah, it's definitely much safer to do things that way. Obviously you don't need to be worried about any image you post, but posting anything controversial or personal without having control over it is pretty risky.

Hi @acidyo thanks for this information it really gets annoying most times when you realise your you cannot not make some changes on the steem blockchain, but it feels good to know we have alternatives to one of our major issues.
Thank you.
@phunke

Been using Imgur for years now, definitely the best image hosting site out there. Glad you're making a post letting people know about it outside of reddit users, as most people have no damn idea what I'm talking about when I've told them about it.

I wish the Imgur community was still like how it used to be a few years ago, I used to be really active on there but it started getting flooded with thristy ass dudes and just really crappy people in general and the content shared on there has become very mediocre or flat out sad to see. I've actually got a post on there that has over 1 million views and a few others that have around 500k views. Lost my mind when I saw the views taking off like that back then.

Hehe yeah it's just Redditors using it as a hosting service for their reposts lately. No wonder the comments are out if control when they are inventized by upvotes. ;)

It's also women from gonewild offering to PM dudes nudes for upvotes and hitting the front page and shit. The comments on that post I saw were so pathetic, man. I've never imagined a day where I'd see hundreds of comments of people begging for a random nude. Do people not realize that there's literally hundreds of thousands of hours (Probably millions at this point actually) of free porn that they could find via google searching? This kinda stuff just blows my mind.

thank you @acidyo for this wonderful post. Many steemians are getting this problem. It is better to recheck your post before pressing the submit button.

Imgur is the best image hosting site around, another image hosting site I like to use is Imgsafe(very simple interface, you don't even need to sign up).

Steemit drag n drop is just so convenient though! I suppose it would be nice to integrate imgur into steemit, but i think that would be overkill. I actually think the perfect solution would be to add a chrome/firefox extension that lets you easily upload to imgur and copy the link to your clipboard for easy posting on steem :)
Cheers!

Hmm well thats a good idea though.
But why would someone edit or remove it after it has been used once and earned for him?

@acidyo Respect man, I knew about imgur and I've been using the website occasionally but I could definitely do with your info about removing images from older posts.

Upvoted and Resteemed , mate!

@lordneroo

great, I'm very interested in such information as a new user, I rarely and rarely see similar and useful information that would help in the process of acquaintance and use on the project ... Thank you, you make life easier for me and many other users. Very competent post

Thank you very much for sharing the beautiful uploading system with us

Thanks @acidyo for this wonderful information as regard another alternative to image uploading.
Imgur will really help big time.

The original way out of the situation. You have thought up this wonderful. Good luck to you and good.

I didn't know that was possible to delete pictures on older posts. I will definitely try this.

Interesting workaround! This whole blockchain technology is confusing at times. Thank you for dedicating your time to educate us all :-)

yeah i use getcloudapp.com and pay for it, i love their tool, makes it so easy to upload, drag and drop and get a url i can drop in a post plus the mac app has gif, image and video recording capabilites.

This is really good information to know thank God I haven't uploaded anything I regret!

I recently was wondering about this myself and I looked around on the internet. Thanks for sharing! Very helpful to learn this stuff

excellent thank you for your help* I always wondered about this...I also thought that images are just forever stored on the blockchain..thanks bless

really good information to know thank

wao... knowledge is never a waste, we live to learn everyday of our lives, thanks for this great piece that you shared @acidyo, its been of great help to me as am new on steemit, i follow your posts regularly and they have been of help to me which has improved my knowledge on steemit. Thank you once again

Another reason why people must be careful about what they leave in the blockchain. But I find it difficult to imagine what anyone could put in a post that could get them fired.

Tnx for sharing this image uploading service with us.

This makes seem like a silly notion, but oughtn't steem ideally handle this (at least for small images)? Post image data in the blockchain, and just have the client/platform read it.

Edit: That way you can edit it like a post, and it only gets removed if the witnesses remove it, as I understand it.

Thanks for this information as who knows what one might not want seen forever on the blockchain.

I don't understand : "they had uploaded an image on a post that was beyond the payout" ? What does it mean?

Good to know @acidyo ! Always dropping that knowledge on us

I've been using flickr with my posts, 1 TB of free storage and allows for people to click and see full size image. May be useful.

@acidyo thank you so much. Like you knew i needed this, I have asked my self what if i mistakingly upload a wrong image, and here you brought the solution. God bless you big. You just did well.

This is such a great trick! We should all do this to get better control of our images, especially if it is something that might not be fun to have stuck around forever.

Thanks for the information. I'm bookmarking this post. I've had a few older posts where I wished I could remove my images but can't. I never thought to look up ways around this. Really great post and super useful.

@acidyo, @otemiz, if you people correctley, are you saying that I should post my images to #imgur then copy the link and embed it on my steemit article while making a post?

I have used imgur as a backup for supload. Just use supload as host not looking at getting paid.

i do wish they put more applications like

the availability to put
a

Backgroud for the entire post
,
some kind of way to color text
and a built in small featured image size allocator
so the size of the image can be changed.

Thats a good idea though. keep it up my friend you have my vote & resteem

Excellent info. I am also aware that what's posted on the blockchain stays on the blockchain, so I tend to use pictures I'm comfortable with long-term and I make sure to include the source.

A simple feature to allow pictures deletion by the same user that uploaded to "steemitimages", would be enough until something better comes. The old post images could say "image deleted by user".

good advice :)

Am going to try this now... Thanks for the info..
