sir smithlabs! I heard that their iron dome system was much more capable than our patriot system, is that correct? But anyway everyone expects Israel to get hit by rockets and bombers and such so they aren't outraged by those but of course they should be!

The Iron dome is a much shorter range system than the patriot, as the iron domes is made for smaller rockets. It is doing very well. The Patriot is for medium range missiles and has been very effective in that area. There is another system, called Archer that is for ICBMs that has a contact kill above 100 miles! That is like shooting a bullet, with another bullet....

Well, they had a contact kill, but operationally, they plan on a large HE warhead with shrapnel, supposed to be lethal to 500 feet. Overkill with their accuracy, but a nice backup. They also plan to launch three at each threat. Very cheap compared to an ICBM...not even counting the damage the ICBM would cause.

Trade magazines. That is where engineers publish what they do for other engineers to keep up. NASA Tech Briefs and aerospace magazines, and there was a writeup in the COTS (commercial off the shelf) journal on the radar trade off system. They direct the missile close, then revert to their internal radar, for final guidance.
They radar illuminate from the ground to help the missile's onboard system. They also overdrive the onboard radar at a burnout level to assist in lockup. They will blow up the radar anyway, so why try to save it?
I suspect they are using the white noise radar system, so the missile will not know it is being painted, so there will be no threat detection.
