[Restaurant_Seoul] Eulmildae, Pyongyang style noodles 을밀대 (평양냉면)

Naengmyeon is famous Korean cold noodles, originally a delicacy of North Korea. There are two types of naengmyeon, Pyongyang style or Hamhung style (cities in North Korea) depending on the ingredients of noodles. The noodles of Pyongyang naengmyeon are usually made from buckwheat, and those of Hamhung naengmyeong are of potato or sweet potato starch, so the Hamhung naengmyeon is more chewy in texture compared to Pyongyang naengmyeon.
Also, if it is served as a cold soup with the noodles, it is called Mul-naengmyoen, and if it is served with a spicy dressing made from gochujang (red chili paste), it is called Bibim-naengmyeon.

What I posted above is Pyongyang neangmyeon (Mul-naengmyeon). Pyongyang naengmyeong is less popular than Hamhung as it tastes a bit weak and watery compared to Hamhung. But, people who loves Pyongyang naengmyeon tend to have some kind of fetish of it (and I'm one of them)

There are several restaurants famous for Pyongyangnaengmyeon, one of which is Eulmildae(을밀대). I have been here for about 4 years and it still is one of the top 3 in my list. That is because dishes are delicious as well as over than 40 year old building makes me feel as if I were back to the past.

When you try Pyongyang naengmyeon first time, you might feel nothing. But I am sure the more you try, the more you get to love this.

인생 첫 평양냉면은 아니지만, 처음으로 '평양냉면'의 맛을 알게 한 곳. 밍밍하기만 했던 그 냉면에서 이젠 육수의 깊은 맛도 느껴지고 폴폴 풍기는 메밀향도 맡을 수 있는건 나이가 들면서 입맛이 변해서인지. [아니면 삼시네끼 이상을 먹고 다니면서 미각이 살아난건지] 여하튼 진짜 머리에 그린라이트가 켜지는게 이런 느낌인가 싶을 정도로 너무 맛있게 먹었던 을밀대 평양냉면. 투박하고 꾸들꾸들하면서 흡사 쫄면같기도 한 메밀면이 굉장히 매력적인 곳이다. 투박스런 냉면이 허름한 외관과 잘 맞아 떨어지는게 왠지 더 정감이 간다. 녹두전이랑 거냉(살얼음이 없는 미지근한 냉면) 한사발을 시키고 소주 한잔 딱! 하면.
