After months of being static, the time to relocate in a pandemic finally came for a while. I would not be taking my entire house with me but the essentials for working were needed. Now it’s fair to say that when we think of essentials, many think of their daily wear and perhaps medication. While these are definitely important, modern necessity also lies in the form of technology. Taking your tech and data with you on the go is highly important, especially when working online. I’ve been a PC user for a long time, but the weight and size of a computer simply wouldn’t be making a trip on this occasion.
Portable computing technology has continued to evolve over the years and while we probably won’t see the same performance in compact machines, the move has spurred some thought over my options where I need a little more computing power for work and play. Now with this in mind, my attention has shifted back to the mobile market. Some might say it is probably worth putting together a mini-ITX build for portability purposes but I personally do not see myself being able to build a unit that will perform and deliver utility in most travelling scenarios. A laptop is just so much more versatile and modern choices bring higher resolution screens and performance modes that can deliver enough for me on a daily basis.
News comes in recent days of possible mobile RTX variants including both RTX 3070 and 3080. The latter will come with a massive 16GB VRAM and 6144 CUDA cores. Personally I feel a little excited as we may see great performance and efficiency portable along with a Ryzen combo, a synergy not seen before may become the new standard in mobile computing. So needless to say, I am actively looking for a new laptop and the next few months leading into the new year might yield some interesting choices.
