Racism in the Library?

in #library2 years ago (edited)

There was a recent notification e-mailed through our district regarding bookmarks promoting neo-Nazi racism hidden in our stacks. Books on the topics of race and culture were apparently targeted by persons unknown to promote religious white nationalism.

I simply cannot understand such a worldview. I may be in the rural inland northwest where the vast majority of the population is white, but still, I know people of African, Central American, Asian, and Native ancestry. There are certainly cultural differences, but there are numerous different national traditions and subcultures even within the white population. Asserting that skin color defines humanity and intellectual capacity is patently absurd based on my own experience and observation.

I'd prefer to not grant any publicity to this particular group of idiots, but I will say it's a new one to me. The KKK and Aryan Nations seem to have a couple holdouts who occasionally make themselves known through leaflet campaigns, but it wasn't them this time. It's also strange to me now each of these small incidents is used by the mainstream media to smear rural America as some kind of hotbed of racism.

How can we address these issues rationally? Education is only effective if people are open to learning. Shaming in the media doesn't seem to work, especially when the media has done little but discredit itself through yellow journalism over the past several decades. False accusations of racism dilute the impact real incidents should warrant, but even a cursory glance at social media shows the label of "racist" applied recklessly. How do you reason with people who have clearly abandoned reason for prejudice? I have no answers, but I welcome discussion.

Consider the possibility that agitators on the the payroll of BLM or the ADL may be responsible for these bookmarks. Remember, the demand for racism greatly exceeds the supply, so neo-Marxist psy-ops are required to keep the grift going.

That is one possibility. However, I do know there are also some legit racist kooks who crawl out of the woodwork every now and again, too. I wouldn't be surprised if you turn out to be right, but I suspect it is less probable than actual racist activism.

Can't really address anything rationally with anyone for any reason if they don't want to be rational about it.

I also think everyone firmly believes that they are completely rational and no one else is.

Quite right. Some of us put some effort into analysis, but it is hardly proof we are faultless. Rationalization is easier than refutation within our own minds.

If you welcome a discussion on this...
Then what do you think of Critical Race Theory being taught in schools?

Because my theory is that mANY perjudices are in fact taught and exploited this way... By design 😎🥓

Based on my limited understanding, it appears to be a combination of Marxist class theory and a niche legal concern blown out of proportion by activists who need to justify their continued anger. It has no place in primary or secondary schools because it is at best a poor analytical tool for general historical trends, and at worst a way to shackle minorities economically and intellectually by discouraging them from even trying to achieve anything.

I'd simplify it even further than that: CRT is a form of Marxism that prioritises focus on ethnic factions instead of socio-economic classes. Otherwise, spot on!

By the way, it's nothing new: despite the fact that the term "Critical Race Theory" is only forty years old, Marxist regimes have been pitting ethnic groups against each other since day one. Need I remind you who coined the word "racist" to begin with?
