E-Juice Expiration Dates: What You Need to Know

in #life7 years ago (edited)

It may not be explicitly required by the FDA (well, not yet) but most e-liquids come with an expiration date somewhere on the bottle. Just like people worry about their food going bad, vapors tend to get stressed out at the thought of their juice “spoiling” or expiring.

This little guide will give you some must-have information about e-juice expiration dates, and tell you what you need to look out for.

So, wipe those beads of sweat from your forehead and keep reading.

What You Need to Know About E-Juice Expiration Dates

Look.

At some point in our lives, we’ve all taken the chance and eaten or drank something that was just a litttttle bit past the expiration date.

Right?

Well, most of the expiration dates that get put on food are actually put there by the manufacturer and are at their discretion. Many times, there isn’t a set date of actual expiration.

(I don’t take my chances with eggs, though. That tends to end poorly.)

But, the same goes with e-juice and other vape products.

It seems as though the experts can’t really decide on an exact shelf life for e-juice so, much like food companies, the vape shops and e-juice manufacturers tend to just stick to a date that serves like a “best by” date.

It’s more of a freshness gauge than actual expiration. If you want to get the full flavor and effects of your e-juice, finish it off before that date. If you’re not super worried about it, then keep on doing what you’re doing.

How to tell if your e-juice has expired

If you’re still worried about your e-juice going bad, here are some things you can look for:

Change in smell

  • Does it not smell the way it originally did?
  • Does it smell sour?

Probably not good anymore.

Change in appearance

  • Is there discoloration?
  • Does it have weird consistency?
  • Has it separated?

Probably not going to be all that great anymore.

If your e-juice has discolored or changed in appearance, then the flavor may be distinctly different and even downright unpleasant.

How to keep your e-juice fresh

In order to preserve the flavor, smell, appearance, and effects of your e-juice for as long as possible, there are some things you can do:

  • Avoid keeping your e-juice in direct sunlight or bright light
  • Keep the container sealed tightly
  • Avoid keeping it in super hot temperatures

Storing your e-juice in the fridge is a great option for long-term storage, and it’s perfectly fine to freeze it. Some e-juice may lose their flavor, though, depending on how they were made and how much nicotine is in them.

Keep in mind, propylene glycol (PG) is in e-juice to keep it fresh, so those that have lower PG levels don’t tend to keep as well as those with higher levels.

E-juice that is made with organic, all-natural ingredients are also much more likely to lose their flavor and potency than those that have been synthetically made. (This is why CBD may lose its potency long before e-juice does.)

The final word

It really all comes down to a matter of personal taste.

If you don’t see any discoloration, or it doesn’t smell weird, then you’re probably okay. But, if it tastes funny or looks off, then you may want to just go ahead and grab yourself a new bottle!

Yeah, i have to throw out e juice all the time from leaving it in my cup holder of my work van .

Yeah, that really wouldn't make it taste very good. It would likely get too hot, depending on where you live.
