I never asked. I hunt elk every year by chasing them until they collapse from exhaustion. This fall I might ask one how much my protective coating of phlegm from 52 years smoking deprived me of oxygen during the hunt. They probably won't tell me, cagy bastages. They're sneaky like that.
Edit: I just remembered I had to see a cardiologist a couple years ago to assess my heart function before a scheduled surgery to remove my gall bladder (I decided not to get my gall bladder yanked. We've become very close over the last 60+ years, and I couldn't bear to part with it. I just quit eating sugar and white bread instead), on the insistence of the anesthesiologist. When I had done all the tests, he told me to keep doing whatever it was I was doing (presumably including smoking more than 20 cigars a day) because it was working for me, and I could have any surgeries I wanted.
