Although watching movies is really great, allows you to get together in a group and share memorable moments, I think the reward and quest process at the brain level is completely different !
In a film, everything is already said and imposed. The visual, the music, the editing of the shots. You will tell me it is a bit like in a book, the author has chosen the meaning of the narrative, the descriptions, etc..
But when in a book the author describes a brown man in his thirties, there are as many possible combinations of this man in the imagination as there are people who read this book. Whereas in a film, if a dark man is shown in a certain way, it is impossible to imagine him otherwise or you will not understand anything in the film !
And this is true for each variable of the narrative, the fact of having to imagine makes reading an active activity unlike viewing which, in most cases, is more like a passive activity, especially in terms of brain work!
And that's what matters most to me : IMAGINATION and its most daily and frequent use possible ! This is the main reason why, in my opinion, without stopping watching movies (way far from that :) we should rebalance our viewing // reading ratio !
