Rain
The sky had threatened to rain all day but did not come to rush until now with a disastrous power.
The feeling of being used came like a thunderbolt to Tiago's head when Elena suggested that getting too involved would only complicate things. They had been going out for so long, all those moments together...
"My feelings crossed the line long ago... You don't know how I have abandoned myself for you!" was the last thing he addressed, with a cry that seemed to boil under his skin, demanding to be released.
She reacted with her carefree attitude, like nothing happened. Sent him a kiss goodbye. "I will see you later, alright?"
He could not take it anymore when he went, in tears, for an old woman's advice in a herbal store near the building. "How could she do this to me?" The mysterious old woman comforted him. "Take this with you" she said with a sadistic smile. She gave him a coded recipe that belonged to a certain Orpheus, a mythological character.
"Don't worry, if she comes back, she will be yours forever"...
But the infusion was not made by Orpheus, but for him. The recipe originally belonged to Aphrodite. The conditions under which Orpheus and Aphrodite crossed roads is a curious story.
You see, Orpheus was a legendary musician, he could charm all living things with the sound of his golden lyre (a gift from his father, the god of music, Apollo), but Orpheus lived a tragic life, since he lost the love of his life and failed on the attempt to rescue her from the underworld...
Aphrodite, the goddes of beauty and love, felt ofended by Orpheus hability to attract people's attention, including men. In The expedition of the Argonauts, Orpheus is know to have saved the crew from the enchantments of mermaids, who sang beautiful songs that attracted the sailors so they would be devoured. Orpheu's lyre released them from the spell.
Aphrodite, in presence of it, was impressed by the event.
"He can handle the lack of attention, will he handle the excess of it?"
The infusion
The infusion was made out of mermaids vocal fluids that impregnated the air with powerfull toxins with their singing. So Orpheu's would become so powerfull, that he would not only attract living things with his songs, but he would make them devour him without realizing it.
After a few days the smell permeated the building. The prosecution concluded that he had poisoned her and that when she realized of it, killed him. Although that does not explain the brutality of the crime scene, because Tiago was unraveled in the center of the room, and Elena collapsed perpendicular to him, drowned in blood.
What do you thing this short story alleges to? It is a very modern issue that I believe is very troubling.
