I WILL FLY: A TRUE STORY OF HOPE AND DETERMINATION

WHAT PRICE ARE YOU WILLING TO PAY FOR YOUR DREAMS?

Scott Adams was spot on when he said;

If you want success, figure out the price, then pay it.

Picture of 29 year old Patricia Mawuli Nyekodzi, Ghana’s first ever civilian pilot, the first woman to hold a Ghana National Pilot’s Licence, and the only woman in the world qualified and certified to build Rotax Aircraft engines.

A SUMMARY OF HER LIFE STORY
Patricia started out wanting to be a Journalist but she couldn't make the cut since the class was full. She was hence coerced into reading Home Economics since that "suited" her best because she is a woman but her poor grandma could not afford the equipment and utensils she required for the course. Patricia being determined more than ever to get a formal education resolved to fund her education herself by working very hard in the forest; cutting trees to sell.

THE FLYING DISTRACTION

Patricia persisted in her job diligently, toiling day and sometimes night in the forest but her concentration and productivity began to dwindle as she was always distracted and frightened by how low the aircrafts flew over her head every time she was in the forest( She thought it was coming for her). Since she couldn't afford to lose anymore productive time due to fear, she decided to find out where the aircrafts were originating from.

DISCOVERY AND SUBSEQUENT REJECTION

After pursuing an aircraft that flew yet again over her head for several miles through the forest, Patricia finally got to the hangar of the aircrafts at Kpong Airfield. This determined young woman sought out the manager and immediately requested for a job. The manager, Captain Jonathan Porter(Chief Engineer at the airfield), told her “You can’t work here. You’re a girl” but Patricia's persistence and determination gave him no choice than to employ her to dig tree stumps from the runway.

OPPORTUNITY+PREPARATION=SUCCESS BUT IGNORE THE NAYSAYERS FIRST

Patricia was asked to lend a helping hand when an apprentice was caught stealing and was immediately dismissed. Captain Jonathan Porte, to his astonishment realized that Patricia was a "NATURAL"(Not really she had been observing and secretly learning–biding her time). Jonathan resolved to teach her everything he knew and help her obtain a pilot license. She was ridiculed by her friends whom she had grown up with in mud huts whenever she told them she was going to be a pilot. It was a miracle that she was training to become an aircraft mechanic but a pilot? that was impossible in the sight of her "well" meaning friends but for Patricia their ridicule was her fuel, in a record-breaking time of 6 months,Patricia got her Pilot’s licence.
CONCLUSION
We all have goals and ambitions but there are times when we just dont have a clue how these goals will be achieved. From Patricia's story HARDWORK, PERSISTENCE,GRIT,HUNGER FOR KNOWLEDGE and IGNORING NAYSAYERS stand out as qualities that eventually aided "the water to find its level". There is a reason most people are ordinary, chose to avoid the path of least resistance, PAY THE PRICE!!
