My wife and I are expecting our first child, and we are completely reacting in different ways. I am worried how I am going to pay for the kids education, and my wife is worried about how they are going to look in stuff. But really we don't have much stuff figured out yet except a crib and a car seat. Today we decided to tackle diapers, and I feel that the world today makes mountains out of little issues. That is why nothing gets done, but besides that I have watched some you tube videos comparing the two. We have tentatively decided to go with a mixture of both, we are going to grab a six pack of cloth ones, and test them out before we buy more, and are also going to have some disposable ones on had. Just in case of emergencies. I really don't want to have to wash poo-pie diapers in my washer machine, but sometimes you got a do stuff to make the wife happy. One thing that one video said, is that you will do 100 to 150 more loads of laundry with cloth ones, to save about 800 bucks, is it worth it.... Any advice?
My take: disposable diapers! Used disposable for both of my children. Although I like the idea of reducing the landfills of diapers, I just couldn’t bring myself to wash that many poopy diapers in my washer. And like I needed more laundry to do! A close friend did the cloth diapers and unfortunately they do have a lifespan. After a while they had to replace them. So I’m not sure of the financial savings. Cloth might be the way to go if you use a diaper service where they take away your dirty diapers and bring you fresh ones. And this may be totally minor, but cloth diapers are so bulky! Seemed a little tougher to move in. Last thought: if you are going to test out both, I recommend getting more than just six cloth diapers to start out. Newborns poop in almost every diaper and you change their diapers like every two hours. So you do the math ;)
Congratulations! Being a parent is seriously the most tiring, rewarding, stressful, beautiful, hard and fun thing in the world :)
That is the main reason. I almost need to grab a crappy washer just for the diapers.
We used disposable ones and it caused redness on the baby skin when used too long. Mix of both would be ideal i think, use cloth when at home, and disposable ones when going out
Ya I like the convenience to throw away.
Bro, you can give cloth a shot, but I can almost guarantee you will say Fuq this shit after about a week or two. .with one child it might be manageable but your house is gonna smell like a swamp. . These ideas seem like a good idea pre-baby, but after all the ooh an ah is over, its hard work. i have 3 under 5yo.
Ha, ya I don't want my house smelling like poop. I prefer to have a clean home.
haha, I have two kids. I have never dared to try cloth diapers but I have a few friends who do, and they say its all about spending the extra $$ and getting the good ones!! Congrats on the new baby! Nothing better in the world.
Thanks, for the info. I am not set on the cloth diapers, my main concern is I don't have time now, so I will have time then to clean up diapers.
Totally, I hate doing laundry (it is my least favorite chore!) so even though I like the idea of not having chemicals on my baby and that its better enviromentally.. I just couldn't do it hah! but I like the idea of using cloth at home and disposable out and about!
most parents prefer disposable diapers than the cloth one. a baby ages 1 to 3 have soft to liquid feces than those 3 to 6. then if got 7 and above most of their feces are hard. so think if what you prefer to use by those times.
i mean in months
I am all for just throwing them away, or using a hose on the kid.
I used disposable in my son's first year because bebies in this age make pi-pi very often and unexpectable. By 8-9 months you can already approximately predict the moment of the next pi-pi. From that age, we began to try sometimes to sat him on a pot (sometimes even lucky), and to wear cloth diapers in the intervals between pi. Of course, very often our sofa and floor mats suffered from this, there was a lot of washing... Be ready.
It seems to me, up to at least 6 month there is no sense to buy cloth ones, because if you count the costs of water, soap and time for washing, you will get a questionable saving.
ah I am going to talk her into disposable ones then. Lots of horry stories.
I am the oldest of 10 kids and when I was growing up disposable diapers were just coming out. We didn't do disposable diapers. It's really icky and a lot of work - not hard, just very time intensive. I can easily see why the best-intentioned person quits and uses disposable. My mom, however, didn't go to work, she stayed home with kids and after the first 6 she had cheap live-in labor (the first ones were old enough to 'help'.) Hmmm... Nope. That still doesn't sound like less work.
I'm not against cloth diapers and if I had kids I might go that way however that doesn't make me enjoy any less the idea of someone else doing the same job that I did for too many years. I'm petty that way.
