Words like violence
Break the silence
They arrive destroying
My little world
Painful for me
I cross
Promises are made
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are insignificant
The pleasures are
Pain also
Words have no meaning
And they are forgettable
All I ever wanted
All you ever needed
Here in my arms
Words are very
unnecessary
They only cause wounds
Enjoy the silence
This is the literary basis of the song Enjoy the Silence, Depeche Mode. I must start by saying that I love this song. Often, when I was down, I used to listen to this music and sip the letter. Especially when I thought there was nothing more to say. In the end, that's what the music wants you to believe: that the words have no meaning and only cause wounds
But I have to disagree! Because? Because the central point of the song is not about the destruction caused by the words (though only what he says) but the refuge / solace in silence as a form of escapism (arriving destroying my little world, reinforced by a King clip in his own desert world).
My belief is that we must say what we feel, what we want and what we need. At the same time, we need the silence to discover these things. We need the silence, and we need words. The lack of words (not being literal here, I am not excluding the dumb, but words as a form of expression) also causes sores. The smug silence can harm as much as hate speech. The silence as failure can also cause harm. No man is an island, as the poet John Donne. How will others know how you're feeling if you do not tell them?
It is easier said than done. Usually we despise the silence as socially non-acceptable. The silence between two people is seen as embarrassing, and so we entertain with small talk, talking time, Big Brother, the woman goes badly dressed, etc.
Only when the mind is silent we can get in touch with the essence of Being.
But we have a habit talk and comment, entertain us with sounds and images, running from deep encounter with reality.
We create false realities on the true reality. We want to believe in our fantasies and makes us uncomfortable silence that allows to penetrate the real and the fake cancel. They are traps of the human mind. Buddha said that the human mind should be more feared than poisonous snakes and avengers assailants. Therefore it is necessary to know it. Know your own mind. For this there is the path of silence. The way of quieting the mental oscillations.
Be silent and learn to listen are as important as whether express. There is an Arab proverb that says Silence is sometimes more eloquent than speeches
There was a pilgrim who, unhappy with what he had heard about the teachings of Buddha, decided to question him publicly: If his teachings are of Causality law, that all that exists is connected to everything else and that there are causes and conditions for something appears or leave to appear, then, answer me now, what is the first cause?
And Buddha silenced. Like when they asked Jesus to prove whether he was the son of God, he was silent.
Silence is the language of God; everything else is poor translation.
There is an old proverb in Sanskrit that says Keystone is the basis of speech . The moment you start talking, you distorted. Words can not capture existence, but silence can.
So how to reconcile the silence with words? The need to express the need to reflect and absorb? Maybe we manage to breathe and exhale. We are so trained that we do not realize, until the time that we lack the air and then savored when the process returns to normal. We need to train and incorporate both the correct expression and the right silence in our lives, so that it becomes as normal as breathing. There is a tale that illustrates the dynamics between words and silence:
When Buddha became enlightened on the full moon in May, he kept silent. For a whole week, he did not say a word. Mythology says that all the angels in heaven were startled and said: Once a millennium someone flourishes as fully as Buddha. Now he is silent, not saying a word !. They say that all the angels approached the Buddha and asked him to say something, please say something. Buddha said: Those who know, know, even without my words, and those who do not know, will not know my words. Any description of life for a blind man is useless. He who has not tasted like the ambrosia of existence, of life, there is no reason to talk about it with them. So I am silent, he said. How can you convey something so intimate, so personal? Words can not.
But the angels said: Yes, we agree, what you say is true. But Buddha, consider those who are on the edge. There are a few that are in the middle, neither fully understood nor totally ignorant. For them, a few words will give a push. For their sake, say something. And all your words will create that silence. The purpose of words is to create silence. If words create more noise, so they did not achieve their purpose.
We can have a more western idea that dynamic in the Bible, where the Word is used for creation. God speaks in the silence, but one must know it to listen, said Pope Benedict 16. In his catechists. God's silence he tells us.
The dynamics of word and silence that marks the prayer of Jesus throughout his earthly existence, especially on the cross, also has to do with our life of prayer in two directions. The first is that in relation to the reception of the Word of God. We need the inner and outer silence so that the word can be heard.(...)
The Gospels often present, particularly in the decisive choices, Jesus retires alone in a place away from the crowds and their disciples to pray in silence and live his filial relationship with God. Silence is capable of excavating an interior space of ourselves, to live God, that his word remains in us: love for him to take root in our minds and in our hearts, and animates our life. Therefore, the first direction: relearn silence, openness to listening, which opens us up to the Word of God.
And then we have the second part of the dynamic: After silence, prayer. To pray is to express a desire is expressed, is to materialize, even in thought, a sequence of words giving them a meaning.
Jesus teaches the disciples praying do not heap many words as the pagans: they believe they will be heard by the power of words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need even before you ask the (Matt 6.7 to 8). Note that Jesus' advice is to not use the words at random, in excess, and not to express not unlike. In Luke 11, for example, he says, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and it shall be opened. (...) If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more the Father in heaven give what is good to those who ask him!
