I recently just saw the video that I have posted below, which is a compilation of people who have recorded their Tesla’s autopilot system detecting crashes, many times before a human would have. The biggest misconception I hear is that autonomous vehicles or driverless cars rely only on GPS and if the map is bad they will take you off a cliff. This is simply not true, the cars instead use cameras which, in real time, assess everything around you, how far it is and what it would take to hit it.
The autopilot system is doing thousands of calculations a second to make sure that the car and the driver is as safe as possible. These are things that no matter how smart or good a driver, humans will never be able to compete with. Even in version one of the autopilot system, Tesla’s that were driven for research purposes had far fewer accidents per mile than a regular driver would. In addition the few times that accidents did occur, they were usually caused by rear ending or another driver’s fault.
The new autopilot system that will be available with the newer cars has also been teased with a video, which I will put below. In this video as well you can see the car’s perspective and what it is actually seeing every second that passes. With the new cars there will be eight cameras all doing what you are seeing the one camera do on the screen. Each camera monitors a location and makes sure that all objects, whether it is a tree, a biker, a person ect, stay far away from the car. In situations where you least expect it, this functionality could really save your ass.
The driving experience in general I believe is going to be fantastic. In addition the cars that they are offering it on are really not that expensive if you take into account what is being offered. The model S is starting at around 35,000 new which will include the newer v2 autopilot and the ability to be upgraded in future patches, which is really the cool part. Like if you were buying a digital game with bugs, your automobile can be patched to fix and better the experience.
I for one am really excited to see what not only Tesla, but other auto manufacturers can do in the next few years. I still like what Tesla has been saying, which is full automation by 2020, but who knows if they can hit that target. Overall I like the direction the whole industry is going and I hope we will be getting more teasers and prototypes for the cars of the future to come soon.

Finally the future has come.
Still cannot believe that the autopilot will have better performance than human, but the technology really develop very fast.
Especially after seeing AI alpha go defeated world's best go players, the world of AI really has come.
More and more job will be replaced by them in the future I think
Well, i support Tesla with all my intelect. heart but one thing isn't clear to me. What if mainstream adopts Tesla and other electric cars, which eventually it will. What about power consumption? Surely solar and wind energy won't be able to power up billions of cars and the other basic electricity at the same time? Nuclear power plants, still the future? Btw. Tesla is my favorit Musk's project. Full of optimism about it. Maybe one day I will drive it.
The only problem autonomous cars will have will be human-driven cars.
I really enjoy driving, but I can't wait until I get into my car after a long day at work and simply tell it to drive home. :-)
I concur.
tesla is awesome but too bloody expensive haha
Agreed, self driving vehicles are a total game changer and are operational today. Class 8 trucks are next, bye, bye long haul truckers.

I love everything about Tesla’s !!Thanks
I have read that driverless cars are involved in a lot of accidents, a higher proportion than the average. However its rare that the driverless car was at fault, what seems to be happening is because driverless cars actually follow the rules, human drivers crash into them a lot! If a light turns amber, the driverless car comes to a stop, it doesnt put its food on the gas and try to accellerate through on the cusp of a red light.
There was some talk of the companies wondering if it would be safer to teach driverless cars to break the law, at least until enough are on the road that human drivers learn how to drive alongside them...!
Amazing!
I don't know why there is so much skepticism around autopilot system...it has been in place for years in the aviation industry.
thank you for your sharing! hopefully it can be well developed soon, apparently it is necessary which should be widely adopted..
I have heard Musk say he thinks it to be at least twice as good as the average driver. He also said he doesn't think it will be adopted or ready until it is up to 10 times safer!
Amazing, and their semi-truck is going to be another game-changer.
I use a GPS but also plan my route to know where I am going, I never trust the GPS to get me to the correct destination as on occasion it fails, you should avoid being dumbed down by any technology. I really like the potential safety features of a smart car to reduce accidents, but handing over total control is another issue. I do not see mass adoption in the near future unless there are financial incentives or penalties to push self driving cars.
Guys... really... A company that loses money on every sale. Is subsidized by the federal government to continue production. Again, everyone wants to ignore the economics like we are going to jet forward into some sci-fy BS future. The economics on these vehicles are SOOOOO bad. There is also very insufficient battery power to actually use self driving semis that costs millions of dollars. This is a DT... We are still 100 yrs from having electric cars for everyone. Why is this?? Because that is when we will be allowed to. Tesla is a front for pretending that we have a free market system with awesome ideas. If we had free market economics in this country we would have been using alternative energy vehicles for the past 80 years. Have you seen the amazing vehicles fro 100 years ago??? They were far more efficient than their gas counters parts, but they were crushed by the tycoons because again it comes down to money. Much more money in making a world run on gas than on alternative power sources. Same with healthcare, we have cures for everything but there is no money in making you well now is there?? Wake up everyone....
