I think what most likely happened is that you triggered some guilt in the person who shouted at you. We've all felt guilt walking past homeless people. It sounds like they were "triggered" in a way by your kind hearted gesture. Not excusing their behaviour though but I think a lot of people lash out in this way through guilt.
