My parents have always been a little obsessed with growing orchards and getting a farm when they retire. Although they will probably never get around to getting a farm, they've managed to plant and maintain quite a few orchards. Growing up I've never really appreciated the fruits of their labor and always complained when they asked me to go pick fruits with them. Now with the approaching recession and statewide mandatory restrictions issued in California tonight due to COVID-19, I realized just how precious those fruits have become.
We harvested over 600 avocados today, clearing out the entire orchard before the issued restrictions went into effect. A lot of these avocados will be going to friends and family.

I haven't had many avocados these past 4 years since New York doesn't have a consistent supply of them. The ones I did have were quite small and were always hard and frozen from transit. I can't wait to try these avocados.

dang I am totally jealous. Now more than ever, you are totally right, the ability to harvest food from your land is incredibly valuable. I love avocado so much, I bet they are way better when they don't have to travel so far.
