My neighbor is one of those people. He is constantly looking to help out all of us other neighbors with anything. He has been a lifesaver on many occasion. He is so kind and is always willing to sit and talk. He is a good soul.
A far as the Nigerian scammers, It does seem like a great deal come from that country, but they also come from other impoverished countries around the world as well. It is not just Nigeria. I have met good people from Nigeria too, just like those other countries. I don't think it is cultural.
I don't know what it is with Nigeria either, but sheer numbers show that a disproportionate number come from that country, and specialize in scams targeting the elderly. So some wonder if culture or the pervasive corruption that they talk about in Nigeria here on Hive may have corrupted the general population as well. When you steal the life's savings of an elderly person (leaving them penniless and homeless) and feel no remorse, something's wrong with your soul.
I wonder if culture doesn't play at least some part? Take people from New York City for instance. In my entire life, I've not met one native New Yorker who wasn't loud, selfish, rude, and obnoxious. Not one. I've NEVER personally met a calm, mellow, polite, and chill New Yorker, male or female, young or old, we all discuss that here. In my small town, they stand out like a sore thumb for acting as if they have a chip on their shoulder. When I ask why they are so loud and angry, they tell me that they have to be that way to survive in cut-throat NYC. They've told us that if you're too nice in NYC, you get run over, and it's hard for them to turn that off when they move to small towns like mine where people are calmer. So we'll have to disagree on this one as I've seen it up close my entire life.
We have two instructors here from NY a husband and wife, known for being loud, disrespectful and rude. The other local instructors are always trying to calm them down. I had the wife as my writing instructor and she was always spoiling for a fight with the students, and I gave it right back to her. When asked why she was so nasty to everyone, she says it's because she;s from"Far Rockaway" as a reason. ??? So I'm leaning towards culture being at least a part of the factor in why so many scammers hail from Nigeria and West Africa in general. Like New Yorkers, you tend to mirror your environment and the people you choose to hang around.
We've seen this up close with the Nigerian students at our small-town college always being caught trying to pull one scam after another. They've even gone after our elderly instructors. No fear of God. None. Not all of them mind you, there are good Nigerian students too, but they are outnumbered by the grifters. It's so bad here, that it's gotten to the point that no one will do buisness with any of them, as the taint has spread so wide. It's sad.
How one can take the entire life savings of an elderly person and feel nothing, is beyond me. My conscience would be eating me alive to the point that I'd have to return the money and pay compensation. I could not enjoy spending it knowing that I just made a senior citizen homeless.
Maybe it's just the "good-heart" in me. Thank God I have that. :)
I'm glad you have a kind neighbor like that, and hope you guys are looking out for him in return. Too often, wonderful people like that spend so much time helping others, that they fail to help themselves, so I do all that I can to provide support for amazing people like that.
I see what you are saying and can understand your perspective. It does give me something to further think about. Kind of like all us Marines being overbearing, crayon eating, loud mouth, beer drinking brawlers😀
Yes, I do look after them, and help when they need it as I am physically able. I couldn;t live with myself I didn't.
