With the weather changing I start to remember killer fog. Well it was @old-guy-photos that reminded me when he blogged about fog, water and trees.
It was late 70's or early 80's when I used to drive through what I call killer fog. It was like you couldn't hardly see in front of you for so many car lengths. Those were scary to me especially at night.
One thing I would do is let a truck go past me, then I would follow the truck as far away as I can without losing his red tail lights. I figure if there was a 30 car pile up ahead he would see ahead of me or he would go through it and I could react accordingly.
Sometimes though I let him get too far ahead and lose him in the fog. Then I'd go slow and wait for another truck. This would be on the freeway. There would always be another truck.
When it was time for the exit and I couldn't see it I remembered what a friend told me, to look to the far right hand side and look for the 3 reflectors, then 2 reflectors, then 1 reflector then I would see a break and curve in the outside line where the exit would be.
That is when I would make my turn into the exit. Well, it works like that here in California anyway.
Also I remember being somewhat clear then a wall of fog. That can be a bit scary. So if you have to drive in the fog be careful. If you don't have to drive it, just stay home.

Having the beach so close fog is a constant thing here, like you I follow trucks lights or the reflectors.

I used to drive to work an hour and a half each way. In the Fall, we get vicious fog. Ill tell you nothing will wake you up faster on a dark foggy night than when a deer runs out and you hit it in a milli second. My high school math teacher got killed when a deer went through his windshield. Thats why I drive a pickup truck.
Wow. Fog and deer to deal with. Yes a truck is better for handling a deer.
I do the same thing when there is a fog. It's better to drive slow and let the truck past you and then follow it.
