Microwave Replacement

If at first you don't succeed, read the directions

I wrote my Built-in Obsolescence article a few days ago and today I finally had a chance to do the installation.

When my brother and I installed the microwave originally, we had some issues. For starters, we had to raise the cabinet to accommodate the over-the-range microwave. Which revealed, what looked like a hunt and seek attempt to find the wall studs.

We were only able to mount the lower bracket to one stud and the gapping hole helped to use a win nut for the other side. I guess, that when we mounted the bracket, we somehow stripped the head of the screw. Because of this, I attempted to install the microwave on the existing wall bracket. That didn't work. It also didn't help that I hadn't removed the wall mount from the new microwave.

However, that wasn't the only issue, as the top mount holes were also off a bit.

After putting up the template and almost succesfully drilling the right holes, I had to get out a 1/2 inch drill bit and create a sort of trench hold to line up the right side hole. It wasn't 100% lined up, but apparently the microwave screw hole provided for some flexibility.

My mistakes are easily hidden with a drawer mat, so no worries.

As far as the stripped screw head goes, luckily I had a solution. I had bought a Grabit Pro kit for something else a while back. I am guessing i didn't use it right before, because after I got the right end and the right direction of the drill working, the screw came out with no issue.

As I mentioned in the other article, my plan was to increase the distance from the stove top to the bottom of the microwave. Regardless of what the old man said, the smaller cubic microwave does provide a little more space. I guess I need a new paint job on the cabinets now.

The work took a little longer than expected, because I expected standardization in appliances. I guess that is too much to hope for, even if it would benefit everyone involved.
