Nosebleed Nightmare - Supplement Intake Gone Wrong!

in #life6 years ago (edited)

I've just bid goodbye to the unemployed sloth life

..because I've started a new job just a few days ago. Congratulations to me! Unfortunately though, it does not have healthcare insurance coverage. Knowing how my immune system has been acting up lately, all thanks to my unhealthy eating habits, I knew I needed to do some "adulting". Living a healthy lifestyle doesn't sound that feasible to me because, who am I kidding? First, the gravity around where I live, is way heavier compared to other places, which makes it so hard to get up from my bed. Second, I know how my mind works. I've had the same brain since I was born, so I pretty much know how it is. So I resorted in taking supplements. At least I could do my body some good- feed it some nutrients it needs to get me through employment without being sickly.

After surfing the net for some time, I've narrowed down my list as to what type of supplements I could bank for. The grand winner: The Golden spice- Turmeric. Or so I thought.

Turmeric Benefits:

  1. Powerful Medicinal Properties
It contains a compound called Curcumin which is its main active ingredient.

  2. Anti-inflammatory
Curcumin battles against inflammation- our body's response to injury/ infection. Effective for relieving muscle pains.

  3. Weight Loss
Curcumin is also known to lower bad cholesterol and improves your metabolism rate (My favorite, so far. LOL.).

  4. Cognitive Capability
It is known to maximize memory retention and heighten concentration.

  5. Skin Care
Curcumin is full of antioxidants- good for anti aging and prevents bacteria that causes acne/ pimples.

After my 1st day at my new job, I headed to the pharmacy, got me some Turmeric supplements and took a capsule before bedtime. In the middle of my deep slumber, I felt something wet on my face and realized that it was blood- a lot of it. Pouring out from my nose. Intensely. I was in deep horror when I rushed to the sink and saw my face in the mirror. It looked like a scene straight out from a gore movie. I was already feeling very nauseous and was about to pass out any second. Yes, it was that intense. Since I've had numerous nosebleed experiences in the past, I knew what the first aid steps are.

Nosebleed First Aid:

  1. Take a seat, and relax. We're adults, I know but in case you feel like crying, don't. It only increases the blood flow.

  2. Bow your head down a bit, not the other way around.

  3. Using your thumb and index finger, pinch below the bridge your nose for around 20 minutes. It is tempting to check if the bleeding has stopped but keep it pinched for 20 minutes, at least.

  4. Breathe through your mouth. If the bleeding persists, seek medical help.

Eventually, after pinching tightly for around 25 minutes, the bleeding stopped. It was a nightmare. I felt drained, dehydrated and scared. What happened? What went wrong? I then sought help from our very trusty friend: Google. Right after I hit enter on my search, a lot of articles showed about turmeric possibly causing a nosebleed. Apparently, a lot of people have experienced and reported the same. It happens especially if you're taking medications such as haprin, warfarin, naproxen and aspirin due to Turmeric's anticoagulant abilities. So if you're pregnant, better steer away from Turmeric, too.

I've learned my lesson. It is best to do some research first, or better yet speak to a medical specialist about it. You know what they say, better safe than sorry.

@dubmenikki - A trick I use stop nose bleeds super quick is to stick a some tissue or cotton wool inside my top lip along the gum line.

I've heard of that but have tried doing it. Why does it make the blood stop though?

I have no idea, just works. lol!

PS congrats with the job! How's it going?
