Compost

in #life5 years ago

A while back, I unfollowed @gardenofeden.
I had followed them since the beginning, never got a vote or comment back.
Don't get me wrong: I do not need to get voted back by someone, if I like their content, but after years of supporting them, it would have been nice to get at least a comment back.

Then, one day, I got a comment back; A snarky reply, where they told me to go meditate in the woods for some years before critizising their post.
All I was trying to point out: Composting produces heaps of CO2*
*This is a common misconception about compostation, I see it everywhere, I comment on it everywhere.

I tried to explain, but got shut down.
I did not feel like showing them my compost.
They will not even see this post.

Still, I want to make clear that even though I do not braid my hair or beard, I do not wear wooden pearls, I have no dreads, I am not a fucking hippie, I still produce my own healthy, organic food.
I refuse to be all magical about it, though.

My Compost Operation

Old Compost:

This has been sitting for 3 years. You can see how wood does not break down as fast as the other stuff

Compost Bin:

Cooked foods and other stuff that rats would love go here. The bin is secured with mesh, so no rodent can get in.

Heaps (finger on lense):

Not clear to see, but that's all compost

Broken Down:

That is 2 years old and just needs to be turned

Berkeley Compostation

Before anyone points it out: Yes, that is not a Berkeley aerobic type of green waste compost.
In this climate, stuff breaks down over winter. I know, I could harvest much more, much more homogenous compost, if I focused on aerobic compostation more.
This is just much less work and all I have to do is throw it in heaps.

com ponere

ponere just means 'to put' and com means 'together'.
Compost is derived from the perfect form of this; '(has been) put together'

Compost

Compost is just all sorts of organic material put together to break down.
Organic just means it is carbon based.
There are different types of compostation, but at the end of the day, when carbon-based stuff breaks (is broken) down, it turns into CO2. (When there is no air in the compost, it will still break down, but the processes are anaerobic, meaning they produce funky stuff like methane, which will later break down to CO2 and H2O)

Whether you burned that material, or let it rot, the CO2 balance is pretty much the same.

If your compostation is highly anaerobic, you might even produce more harmful climate gasses than by simply burning it down.

Climate Gas

I do not really follow the theory that you can boil down the environmental crisis to just CO2 and some numbers. But that is for another post.

However, claiming your compostation was carbon neutral is just nonsense.

I will not go meditate in the woods, yet I already know I am doing the right thing here.
I do not have to go full hippie just to grow some potatoes organically.
I grow some of my own food and often have enough to share with friends.
I am not as cool as @gardenofeden, not as stylish, not as alternative.
Yet I am also doing a thing here and I refuse to be shamed for being less esotheric about it.

Your compost produces tons of CO2

Sort:

They turned into votetrading early on and with Hive into reposting old content to continue to votetrade hence the downvotes started occurring. I supported them early on as well but after witnessing Quin at steemfest 2 I got a second opinion.

Quin is an unusual character :D

They are nice to hang out with and it was pretty cool meeting them at the different Steemfests. And: Some aspects of what they do are highly admirable.

I might go back to following them, regardless of how they behave here.

Interessanter Artikel.

Is wohl ne ziemliche Plörre... egal, Hauptsache es ballert! ;-)

Ich kann sowas nur empfehlen, will es aber natürlich niemandem aufzwingen.

Ist auch schon bereits gespeichert... ;o)

I have no dreads, I am not a fucking hippie

LOL, I can attest to that, you are quite normal in appearance!

Thanks :D

I fucking hate dirty hippies but thats like half my friends lol, it's a love hate I guess

Its always crazy not to get back a comment or a vote from an account you duly follow and support, I mean, i'll have done the same thing. At least engage with me even if its once in a while.

Agreed.

Hive is a little different than other media; by helping your supporters with votes, you can stake them up and enable them to help you more.

A lot of creators are just too greedy and do not think ahead far enough.

Exactly, when you help your supporters they come back stronger with building their stake and exactly support Others too. You raised a strong point.

Oh ... I smell fresh garden , I hope this new fresh soil helps lot plants :)

Good to grow your own food. Doing gardening is great thing we love doing here every day. I do use compost for plants in my garden and it works really well !

mhhhhh
the good smell of newly minted CO2

soon not only bitcoin will boil the oceans, but also ur evil garden >:)

Climate change activists are some of the most toxic people on earth. Especially when they are involved with BLM or Indigenous rising and its racially motivated hate behind their agenda.

This is what I was trying to do here at the house but sadly one of the guys decided to move my pile into a trash bin...

I’ve got a little compost goin... mostly loaded with duck shit and bedding (the duck shit is apparently some of the best stuff around for compost due to the high nitrogen content). I admittedly don’t know too much about what I’m doing... just throwing everything I know that organically breaks down into a pile lol

That should do it. Duck shit is 'hot' compost - too hot for most plants - so just let it break down a while.

Compost may produce CO2, but then so do people. At least it can be used to grow more plants that will absorb it. Nature has cycles that we can help along. We have several compost bins. Stuff like uneaten catfood goes in a municipal scheme that has the systems to break it down. I support a rat-proof compost bin may be an option. We do get a few rats around here and don't want to encourage them.

I farted, now I feel guilty because I contributed to the crisis.

Fotosynthese gibt's nicht mehr... ;-) ;-)

Just take a look at me here meeting a post that addresses acknowledging individuals who support your content 😂
I saw your vote on a comment I made on @josediccus's post and that's what made me find myself in your blog. It has just been a thing for me to always check out those who vote my post, leaves a comment, or reblog my post. I always find myslef wanting to reciprocate that kind gesture back to them either by following them, leaving a comment on their post too, or upvoting their most very recent post so as not to burn the rewards on the previous.

I actually could relate to what you felt, so no judgements for your action. Btw, nice sensitization post about Compost you've got there.

I like that attitude :)

Following you now.

Wow! Thanks for the follow back 😊
