Construction Site Idiocy

Construction

Recently, I worked some construction jobs.
I quit that some time ago, but the company I had worked for needed some urgent help.
It was good for a few days, but I would not want to go back to it permanently.

Inside a hospital - thought the corridor looked cool
It even had a padded cell...

Job

The job itself wouldn't be so bad, but the stress...
There is very little idle time (basically none), a lot of responsibility and shit pay.
Also: Nobody respects you the way they should.

I was just there to help out for a few jobs so that was ok.

The electrician cut through the whole wall 😮

WTF

I mainly wanted to share the photo.

This is not a timberframe house with drywall; this is brick & mortar.
That particular building was from the 50s.
The electrician routed out slits for the wiring.
That's fairly normal...

But when he did the same from the other room, both cuts met and that madman took out the whole wall.
It's not a supporting wall, but it won't even carry its own weight like that.

This will probably not be noticed, but filled in.

Hive

I can even bring this back to Hive:

  • Working like that is ass.

I don't want to carry heavy stuff around dusty, dangerous places.
It's cool for a while, but the pay does not justify the stress.

  • Just because you hire pros doesn't mean it will be done well.

This house is part of a bigger project.
The total volume is impressive.
The contractor for that wiring will have enough work for 2 people for months.

The person who did the above job was drunk or somehow else unfit for this type of work.
I would not trust them to change a lightbulb.

Which all brings me back to Hive:

I should seriously finish & ship some of the apps I've built.
I am no electrician. I am not even officially qualified for the job I did that day. I would have (had?) to look up how to wire the sockets correctly, but I would have done a better job than that guy.

I have next to 0 experience operating webserver stuff.
...but I have 0 passion left for any of the jobs I have done so far.

I just wanted to share the picture and a few words and now I am back to my usual topic...

The problem in crafts is that skillful hands and strength are often used, but not brains.
A real experienced craftsman, of any profession (mason, plumber, electrician), will not perform according to the project what is not logical.
If he encounters any illogicality, a real craftsman will call the designer and clarify the situation with him.

This cut wall was made either by a beginner or a lawyer who has no idea about construction.
I remember a situation when a beginner started to drill while carrying a column, because the designer drew the line for the cable route through the concrete column...

I'm maybe old-school, but that electrician work is so wrong, on so many levels... I'm shocked that any professional would do something like that... Not just cutting the WHOLE wall, which is out of mind, but also running those wires so low...

I was helping out a few times when an electrician was doing work in the newly-built house of my parents, and later on, when I was changing the whole electrical wiring at my home. Both times, wires were running 20-30 cm from the top of the ceiling and then going directly down to the sockets... not like this... It is dangerous for multiple reasons!

But, after a few tryouts with "professionals" here in Spain, I am/will do all future works myself... I was always against that in the past, as I thought that amateurs would always do the worst job, but after witnessing things similar to this that you shared, I doubt it! Especially when you do something for yourself, you pay much more attention and you want to do it right!

And regarding HIVE, you should finish your stuff! Do something great and show by example... There is no better way than that!

The wires being so low is perfectly normal.
I think the guy went strictly according to his plans, which was the exact problem.
This guy is properly trained - this is Germany after all.
It's just that he left his brains at home or something.

As far as the job I did: An amateur could not have done it better, but would have taken much longer - I worked with an experienced crew. I have done that thing 100s of times before, myself.

Spain? That's a much different story 🤣
There are serious professionals in Spain, too, of course.
...but I have seen things there...

Haha! Krass!
Da hat einer in Statik aber gut aufgepasst. Macht der Putzer schon zu...
Aber !WITZ beiseite, das kann ziemlich gefährlich werden, wenn die Mauer später umfällt und jemand ist in der Nähe.

and shit pay.

Go full time, sounds great!

I find that people like you who can code are generally quite shit at manual stuff like this, must be just me (the house would collapse if I did this).

Nope. I can proudly say that I can build stuff well. I am also good at math. And I look good. If it wasn't I, myself, I wouldn't believe it 😎

👍👏

LOL. What a moron!!!! Pay peanuts, get monkeys as the saying goes.. It reminds me of some building site idiocy I have seen myself.

The customer is not paying peanuts.
It's also a serious real estate dude and the whole project is huge.
Basically bought a whole street monopoly-style.

That contractor was an idiot, though. Maybe the apprentice.
