A famous proverb says that " Curiosity killed the cat " but curiosity is really a defect?
On the one hand, be curious is a quality and it's benefit to ask the right questions develop the knowledge. I think that I teach you nothing there above...
But, on the other hand, the proverb says that curiosity is a defect, why?
The first time I saw this proverb I said to me" something is wrong there ", so I made searches to understand the signification of this proverb.
This is what I was able to understand of the meaning and the origin of this proverb:
The origin of this adage come from literature.
That form of the expression is first recorded in the English playwright Ben Jonson's play Every Man in His Humour, 1598:
"Helter skelter, hang sorrow, care'll kill a Cat, up-tails all, and a Louse for the Hangman."
Then, the evolution of the proverb to " Curiosity killed the cat " is unknown but his meaning is that It's dangerous to interfere with people life and to ask too private questions.
But, it's clear that curiosity is more a quality than a defect for the following reasons :
1. Learning:
Research says that you increase your ability to learn and retain information when your curiosity is ignited. When you are curious, the limbic reward system of the brain actually illuminates. This is why it is important that teachers spark curiosity in the classroom and use curiosity as a teaching method.
2. Personal Growth:
The degree to which you are curious is correlated with your level of openness to personal growth opportunities and your capacity to connect with others.
3. Squash Stereotypes:
Since research indicates that curiosity promotes the cognitive process and leads to a greater capacity for personal development through openness to new experiences, then curiosity must also have the power to squash stereotypes.
