Sources of revenue🏝️ Country and People of the Dominican Republic

Hola mis Steemians

In addition to his standard of living, which is often defined by his identity / origin, it is immensely important for the Dominican to feed his family and shape his income.

Tourism - the main source of income of the Dominican Republic

But that was not always so. At the beginning of the 20th century, agriculture was still the main activity.

Agricultural products include rice, coffee, cocoa, corn, peanut, sugarcane, plantains (banana), coconuts, tobacco, cattle, pigs, goats and various types of fish (pike, perch, shark or even tuna).

Around 1.2 million people lived between 1925 and 1930 in the Dominican Republic. Over 80% of it in the countryside and only 20% in the few cities. The country lived exclusively on agriculture and few other businesses.

Sugar cane plantation

With the seizure of power by Truijllo in 1929, the main products were still cocoa, sugar and coffee. 1935 Trujillo brought all large estates in his own possession. This caused a big decline in the decline of the rural population. But a massive influx into the cities.

He expropriated many farmers, imprisoned the rural population or killed them in the worst case. So he came to the most important and largest estates in the country. After that he left the rural population (at minimal wages), as in times of slavery partly on their own - expropriated by him - fields work for him.

Thus Truijllo had the sole monopoly on all important lands of the country in the time of the Second World War. This included, above all, rice production, milk production and cattle breeding.

Today the Dominican Republic lives

mainly from tourism and not necessarily from agriculture. Much is grown and you get actually almost everything you know from Europe or America. For self-sufficiency, it is not enough here on the island. The staple food, rice, has been introduced for many years.

Free trade zones as sources of revenue

After the income from tourism and its industries, the important income comes from the so-called "Zona Francas" - the free trade zones. These huge industrial areas are located mainly in the major metropolitan areas of Santo Domingo, La Vega, San Pedro de Macorix, Puerto Plata and Santiago.
In order to stop the rural exodus, free trade areas are now being built in rural areas.

Foreign companies can settle in these free trade zones in order to produce their goods cheaply. Above all clothes, shoes, colors and metals are processed. The people who work here do not earn more than the minimum wage, which is only 1,785 pesos (about 35 euros) per month. The goods produced here must be at least 80% executed. Thus, a maximum of 20% may be sold on the domestic markets.

Third in revenue

here on the island the "Domincan Yorks". These are the Dominicans who live in Puerto Rico and especially in the United States of America. The transfers of this kind to their relatives here, is an important foreign exchange source of the Dominican Republic. For many relatives often the saving straw.

Only after these three sources of income:

  • tourism
  • Free Trade Zones
  • Domincan Yorks

follows the export of fruits and cigars.

A majority of the population, who could not enjoy a school education, earned their meager livelihood through occasional work, as I have already mentioned here. The (in)official unemployment rate is actually (only) 14.3%. It even declined slightly compared to recent years. Unfortunately, this statistic is completely meaningless, since all the casual workers are not counted at all/are not countable. Estimates assume a much higher unemployment rate of about 25-30%. This number is still too deep for me ...

Interesting! Dominican Republic has gained popularity in Turkey a lot, because of a tv show called Survivor, where the contestants are allocated to the remotes islands of DR. Have you heard about it?
