The modern world is full of noise. Sometimes it seems like everything is demanding your attention and trying to distract and interrupt you.

We all need some silence from time to time, but we need more than just the occasional small break. Silence and solitude should be part of our daily rituals.

But of course, the noisy world tries to make you feel guilty when you want some personal space. After all, when you’re alone and quiet, you’re not really doing much, are you? You’re not working hard for the next promotion, buying things with your hard earned cash — you're just lazy and selfish.

You should never feel guilty for wanting to isolate yourself from the big bad noisy world — just as long as you don't over do it, of course. Some quiet time is crucial for self-reflection.

Even computers need a reboot sometimes. Why shouldn’t we? A quiet mind helps you put things in perspective and lowers stress, anxiety, and fights depression and other disorders. When you learn to appreciate the moments of silence, the world will seem much more peaceful and comfortable.

When you’re permanently busy doing things, you forget what is important. Constant activity will just add more and more noise in your brain until you forget who you are, and what your place in the world really is.

Silence and distance allow you to view the outside world in a more detached and rational way. Just sit alone for a while, and take an objective look at all the noise running while in your brain. Is all that noise really helping you be an accomplished human being? A chaotic mind will only breed stress and discomfort.

Try to pause for at least 30 minutes every day. Make a ritual of it, and ignore the voices in your head saying you’re just wasting time. Just sit quietly and enjoy the silence, or learn how to meditate. You don’t need to become a Buddhist and sit in weird poses. Meditation is a proven technique to quiet the brain, with many psychic and physical benefits. Do it every day in the morning, and the days will seem more peaceful and less stressful.

The benefits of some quiet time may not be apparent right from the start, but once you get used to the silence, you’ll wonder how you could ever live without it.
