The best thing we can do is either flag comments like this if you want to punish them and if you don't want to punish them, just don't reward them with a response, upvotes, follow. Once the effort outweighs the rewards, they'll eventually disappear or go away anyways.

I sometimes try and focus on the positive. I upvote the non-comment spams if they get out of hand. In some places it can be rather hard to even find the real comments when they are barred all the way at the bottom of 5 or 10 spam ones easily.
I suspect once people start seeing the spam they just go onto the next blog. It’s often easy to assume if you start seeing a bunch of spam in a row the rest of the comment section is filled with it as well.
