Our Calendar

A calendar can be defined as a means of organizing days for social, commercial, religious or administrative purposes, which is done by giving names to periods of time, typically days, weeks, months and years.

Today, the Gregorian calendar named after Pope Gregory XIII, who introduced it in October 1582, is the most widely used calendar, around the world. This form of calendar has twelve months in a year, with a number of days which vary from twenty-eight to thirty-one days in a year.

However, some people believe that, instead of the Gregorian calendar we have adopted, we should make use of the lunar calendar, which has approximately twenty eight days in each month.

In a scalding-hot argument against the 12-month calendar, a September 1927 issue of The Outlook proclaimed : A month is a wholly irrational division of time. It has no relation to anything in astronomy, or human experience. It is an inaccurate and varying measure of time that is a constant annoyance in business and a misleading unit in science. It has no religious significance. A month is nothing but just a bad habit.

There are some arguments that since we actually love it when it seems like everything should revolve around us, we should have months which have twenty-eight days, since the average time of a female human's menstrual cycle is twenty-eight days. If we will be going by the lunar cycle(This is a form of time-keeping that has been employed by several civilizations, through the course of history), we should have thirteen months in a year, with twenty-eight days also.

Some people are of the opinion that the decision to use the twelve month calendar with twenty-eight, twenty-nine, thirty and thirty-one days in each year is affecting our lives in several ways, with people having to wait for different time periods within the year to get their salaries.

However, it should be noted that if we have to change the way our calendar runs,we'll have to recalculate everyone's birthday and holidays and change all our calendars and every article in the legislation that involves dates. A massive program will need to be initiated to get the world to change date systems.

This change is pointless until you get a significant part of the population to go along. If it is eventually successful, there will be the need to educate billions of people who have lived their lives on the old system.

I am only expressing my opinion concerning this matter and your respective opinions will be immensely appreciated, thanks for reading. Live long and prosper.
