Improving Your Learning Ability

in #life6 years ago

If you are looking to enhance your learning skills, you might have asked advice from teachers, parents and even older students. Their intake on the matter tends to differ. Older students use their personal experience and what works out for them. Parents and teachers may advice based on observation of what worked out for other students. Some information may also be based on research.

What the tutors say is not always enough, and you will still need to supplement.

Here are some pointers to get your mind set on learning:

Be aware of your surroundings

Preparation for learning is usually different depending on where you are going to be learning from. Learning in a school environment is different from learning by yourself even in preparation. Although these steps are a guide on how to study and learn better, they are specifically for self-learning such as in your home or in a quiet place without disturbances.

In a situation these steps need to be altered or changed, try applying them in the same quiet area environment they were intended for. To ensure your success while learning, use your best judgement while trying your best to stick as close to these guidelines as possible.

Get rid of trivial disturbances in preparation for learning

Begin by assessing yourself. Are you too tired, stressed, irritated angry or bored? Are you too cold/warm?

Write down on a piece of paper everything bothering you or that which may be a hindrance to your learning. This could be done before going to school if it is in preparation for a school day.

Your written list should include anything that might be bothering you. Even the slightest of problems may mess with your brain's processing power. Begin with that of the utmost importance and fix the issue. Work them through from the biggest to smallest of problems.

Your disturbances are supposed to be adequately taken care of (if tired and you can afford some rest, sleep! If in need of a bathroom break, make sure you do it. If your lousy breath gets to you, brush your teeth). Fixing all this keeps your brain from wandering, hence keeping on task.

Rid your mind and body of all concerns

A wise monk once gave blanking his mind and body as a secret to his studies. You are advised to participate in a calming yet indulging activity for ten minutes. This calming activity may range from taking a stroll around your room quietly to reading a children's book or even taking a shower (not really washing yourself but letting the running water soothe you ).

Choose anything that is slightly active which requires slight concentration yet is calming at the same time. Once set with the activity of choice, focus on making it a routine, using a stopwatch to help time yourself well. Doing it over and over will help.

It’s time to learn now

Following your ten minutes of reading a children's book or activity of your choice, your body needs to be completely relaxed. Lie down on a bed/coach and concentrate on every muscle and stressed points on your body letting go off control in those areas. Relax everything, from your head working your way down to your feet. Allow your body to sink into the bed or act dead if it helps. You shouldn't be using any muscle let alone move at all (besides breathing and living).

Listen to everything as you allow your senses to become alert. As your muscles relax fully in a long time, you may feel them itch. Gradually allow your muscles to start working after doing this routine for at least five minutes. It's now time to drink some water. The recommended amount is 32 oz., to begin with, although brains are different. Drink slowly and calmly and soon after you will be ready for your learning.
