in #life6 years ago

Historic and surprising day, spectacular lunar eclipse will become tonight the undisputed star of the night sky. From its appearance on the horizon until dawn, the satellite will be dyed reddish, gradually earning its nickname of blood moon or red moon.

The longest lunar eclipse of the century.

• The penumbra phase of the event will last a total of 6 hours, 13 minutes and 55 seconds.

• The partial phase 3 hours, 54 minutes and 34 seconds.

• The total phase, the most spectacular of the whole night, 1 hour, 42 minutes and 57 seconds.

During all this time, the moon will undertake a long journey through the shadow of the Earth, going through different phases.

Other eclipses:
Lunar eclipses like the one on April 4, 2015, whose total phase lasted only 4 minutes and 37 seconds.

The longest previous eclipse occurred on July 16, 2000, whose duration in the total phase reached 1 hour, 46 minutes and 24 seconds.
This astronomical event occurred in the last year of the 20th century, which gives this Friday's phenomenon the record of the new 21st century.

The longest eclipse of the century will be accompanied by the smallest moon of the year. Also known as mini or micro-moon, the terrestrial satellite will be located at the point farthest from its orbit with respect to Earth. A factor that, on the one hand, will contribute to the long duration of the event but, on the other hand, will make the moon less flashy than usual.

During this phenomenon, the moon will be dyed red due to a curious physical effect known as Rayleigh scattering. In the context of the lunar eclipse, the Earth's atmosphere will distort the sunlight that normally illuminates the silver satellite, allowing only the red light, the one with the longest wavelength, to reach the Moon. This same phenomenon is what causes the characteristic reddening of the sunsets.
