Why scam others if you're 100% healthy?

Recently I saw a post about someone on Hive who was using the medical condition of her mother to scam others. So apparently another person uncovered this scam.

I looked and it seemed like this account may be a catfish and an experienced scammer at that.

I think the reason why is that most people are empathetic when it comes to medical conditions. I've had one all throughout my life, and even when I have not asked for financial support, I have asked for support in other ways, like helping me with going to the hospital, advocating for me in front of the doctor, or helping me to buy medications and all that.

I've had empathetic people help me with all these things, including people who I do not really know. So when people provide proof or show proof that they are going through something medically, empathy is always the first emotion.

So I guess this person took advantage of this empathy, including the fact that they have built some sort of friendship and reputation with some other accounts here, who then went on to vouch for them when they were seeking these "scam supports."

I see a lot of people blaming themselves for giving them money. However, it is mostly emotionally intelligent people that are empathetic. People who are emotionally sound or emotionally intelligent often fall for scams, especially if they've experienced the rough side of life.

When I saw this post and the way the account replied in comparison with how they previously related with others, the first thing that came to my mind was that somebody's actually still in their stuff and using this stuff to catfish people.

I might be wrong, and they're just hardened criminals who understand how to take advantage of the emotional intelligence of people.

Back in the day I used to be very close to someone on Hive, and we talked a lot on Telegram. Then something happened, and I couldn't even chat back to people anymore. So many years later, I saw the same person trying to ask me to buy a token or a coin.

Immediately I saw this, I knew it wasn't the person who owned the account that was talking with me. The reason why is because the person who I previously talked with had never ever suggested that, and all we did was to talk about business on Hive and business in real life, and there was no way they suddenly became a scam artist. I understand that people can change in life.

Life can make you go through morbid character development; someone who was once innocent might become a hardened criminal because of life, and this unpredictability is why we cannot completely understand others.

There is no excuse for what this person has done. In fact, it is one of the biggest scams I have ever seen: well doctored and arranged from 2024 and making over $6k allegedly. Perhaps they wanted that money for something big and then chose a heist to do it. Absolutely ridiculous! It undermines the suffering that people who are truly sick go through and the fact that some sick people truly need a lot of support.

Sort:

What a horrible thing to do, scamming people by saying your sick. Some people will do anything for money to fulfill their greed, even by taking advantage of others. There are people who are genuinely sick, and I don't see them asking for money. The horrible thing is that because of these scammers those good hearted people who helped the scammer now will be much slower to help again in the future when there really is someone who is sick and in need.

It makes me sick to see people doing this stuff when you know they are perfectly healthy and don't have a care in the world. Yet they live to scam others out of their hard earned cash...

I needed to read this for real. You said it exactly how I would have said it. This person took advantage of the friendship she made here.

I’ve known this person right from when she joined this platform. I didn’t onboard her, but she was a newbie I cared for and I loved her dearly. Heck, I even got into a fight defending her a few months ago.

Realizing the bond and friendship we shared was all a scam from her end, hurts me more than the money that I lost. I wasn’t just scammed financially, I was scammed emotionally and it hurts so bad, so bad.

I’m happy we got to know the truth because if she had paid me all the money she owed me, I still would have lent her more, because that’s the point we got to as friends and in my book, that’s what you do for your friends.

Thinking about how I asked about her mom’s health over and over again is funny😂😂 I keep imagining her laughing really hard after ending the call each time we spoke, oh lord😂😂

It is well Jose🥰

You were a friend to a person in need. I don't have a lot of that in my life, and somehow people don't realize that genuine friendship beyond material things is rare. I spoke to her too, she was filled this ability to say the right thing. That's why I hoped she could have debunked this. I liked her a lot, and I can't still believe this.

I hope that one day she can release a statement and explain why she had to give up the solid reputation she built because of this. It's saddening. To think you spoke to her on phone

I'm sorry to hear that, being scammed is a horrible feeling. Especially when they take advantage of your emotions like that... It's a betrayal that is hard to forget!

I think the same as you. I’m honestly tired of people trying to scam others in any way, but sometimes I also wonder who’s behind it. Maybe it’s someone who’s completely lost, with no money or food left. We judge fast, but scamming is never right, especially when it’s about health or people who really need help to survive. The worst thing is that because of this, many stop trusting, and those who truly need support end up suffering the most.

The person who did the scam had no right to do so. I can barely hold a 9 to 5, yet I work 12 to 13 hours daily to provide my needs, they could have found other genuine ways, they just created a big problem for people who needs true help.

Yeah, definitely.. we work too hard for some to try and take our money scamming us.

Only who has never suffered directly or by family does a lame scam like that! No one should ever play with health issues, I think who does that deserves to get something, play with people good faith is utterly lame

People can play with anything to get money and unfortunately even go to the extent of scamming people, especially if they even know that can take advantage of health condition

I wanna be a scammer when I grow up..

!pimp

Lol why

Lol. The heck you'll be. 😂

I've met somebody who did that. She used her children, who had actual conditions, to solicit donations. But it was exaggerated and she used the money on herself. She was eventually caught. She's lucky she didn't end up in jail.

Yeah, people do this. It's unbelievable that it happens here: Used a non-existent person to solicit and even borrow funds and refused to pay. Could have come out clean and just be honest. It's so sad.

👍👍👍

It undermines the suffering that people who are truly sick go through and the fact that some sick people truly need a lot of support.

This is probably the worst thing that comes from this type of scam... I was one of those who "believed" this HIVE person, and the money isn't important in all this... But FUTURE help, for people who will NEED IT indeed, will not come... That's the worst thing about this...

And in some way, we "lost" this battle, and the bad actor won... I hope I'm wrong and things will settle in the future... until the next scam... 😞

This case indeed is a horrible one, though I wasn't surprised when I first saw the post about the lady who claim to have had a sick mother and she use this as a Chanel to buy people's empathy and scam them, it really inhuman. She may feel or think she's very smart but one day camer will definitely hunt her down.
Her actions have cause alot of damages here on the platform n people will fine it difficult to help others here.
