A key part of increasing consciousness and personal power is being open to sensing and responding to the suffering of other beings.
Yes. However, there is great error to be made in trying to respond to the suffering of ALL beings. There's a great book on this Pathological Altruism, here's a fascinating interview with the author
The interview here discusses altruism that has been twisted by denial, I didn't have time to listen to more than 45% of it, but what I did listen to does not comment on altruism that attempts to help everyone. The author's thoughts on the assessment of altruism immediately jump to her assuming that judgment is the way to assess the situation - whereas in truth, judgments ALWAYS include a denial of some kind and are thus always errors.
Why is an attempt to help everyone automatically pathological in your mind?
Well thanks for listening to some of it.
I would say that trying to help everyone entails imposing will and force.
Every political movement or ideology that ever tried to "help everybody" ended up just being an evil bloodbath.
Balance is needed and actually, it is possible to help everyone just by focusing on specifically not overpowering anyone (or self). The more we understand ourselves and balance, the more we are able to truly help everyone without any unpleasantness involved.
