Delayed Gratification, Is It Important?

in #life7 years ago

Life is so full of conveniences lately, It's easy to become impatient. In fact, Many people are incredibly impatient. Waiting in line, or having to wait on anything is such a hassle.
"What? Have I to wait more than two days for shipping? What a Joke! "
Is this going to become a problem in the future? Many people cannot wait for gratification these days! We have to have everything RIGHT NOW!
But is delayed gratification important for our ability to be successful?

Many Things Don't Happen Right Away

Being able to wait, makes it easy to get to your goals. Many people can't handle the consistency and delayed gratification that success often requires.
I've seen this a lot since I became self-employed.
So many people want to be self-employed like I am. And they ask me how I did it. When I let them know that consisted of a year and a half of 12 hour work days While maintaining my job to get to this point. They seemed turned off to the idea completely.

I know a few people who tried to become self-employed, and when their product or service didn't "explode" immediately making a million dollars, They quit and had to get another job.
To them, Self employment wasn't worth the sacrifice they had to make. So they choose to stay at the jobs that they hate.

People Don't Stick With things!

People are so quick to give up these days, Want to watch a video? If you have to wait more than 20 seconds, Many people will leave.
Can't get the career you want right away? Then give up!
So many people are like this! Which holds a huge advantage for those of us willing to keep trying, Learn from failure, Get up again!

I always thought getting what I wanted out of life would be difficult. Because everyone around me makes it appear that way. But as I get older, I realize that people don't get what they want simply because they don't want it bad enough. And when I say "want it bad enough." I'm referring to working towards the goal. Not just sitting around daydreaming about it.

How can you improve your ability to wait?

I hate saying "wait" Because that infers that you are just "floating" through life. By "waiting" I'm referring to fighting, And working towards it. But being patient enough to get your "turn" to be successful.

Know your goals

It bugs me when I talk to people, And they have a series of things they want to do in their short life. But they have no plans, No goals and absolutely no idea how to get there.
Did you know, That there is a cool search engine called "Google?" yeah. If you want to do something you usually can get a step by step guide on how to do it!

We are some dang lucky people. Having access to the internet, All these groups, Books and how to's. It makes getting the life you want 100% easier.
You need to start breaking down your goals. Don't say "I want to become self-employed."
Instead, decide what kind of business you want to build. Look at the people making a ton of money, See what they are doing. ANd gradually lay out a game plan on how you can achieve it.

Plan! Plan! Plan!

How did I become self-employed?
My handy dandy planner! That's how! I keep track of to-do lists. My goals for the week, I also have monthly goals. And I'm trying to improve on my six months/ 12-month goal plans.
Did you know that writing something down can help you achieve the goal?
Then you can get even closer to what you want out of life, By checking your plans. And breaking them down. Into easy steps.

I want to travel out of country hopefully soon! That sounds scary, I have never done it before.
So I broke it down to easy steps.

  • Fill out these papers
  • Get passport
Then for the hard stuff! Like booking the flight/hotel. Etc.
I'm more likely to do it now because I broke it into smaller steps.

PRACTICE

Delayed gratification takes practice, Next time you want to give up on something make yourself wait longer. It's like a muscle.
Sure, Sometimes you do have to let things go because you aren't going to get the results you want. But at the same time, many of us give up, Right before life is about to change!

Being able to wait a little longer for things, Can have a massive impact and can change the world as you know it. Many people don't have this quality anymore. But you can develop it.

Building wealth is sometimes like losing weight, a little at a time will finally get you there. Delayed gratification is the most important

Can I build wealth if I start losing my weight?

Lol, joking. Haha.

Very awesome post. I need to remind myself of these things all the time. I want to be self-employed in a few months. It takes alot of patience and dedication. That's the life of an entrepreneur though. Resteemed.

Cheers

I agree with you!
I love that picture with the dimonds! Sometimes i am also unpatiant, but it shows exatly that simetimes it is better to wait and be hard worker! Thanks for the post!

We live in a microwave world, where we expect things fast. So if our internet doesn't load a webpage in half a second, we call to complain.

No wonder the rest of our expectations of what we deserve are not realistic.

Great reminder, as always, about living life well and being willing to work hard to make a difference.

waiting, thinking, and fasting i think are the three most critical skills.
so i agree, but people also have to find that line inbetween and walk it, sometimes people wait too long, a lot of people spend so much time on something that turns out to be a waste of time. knowing when to stop something and move on is hard

So true!! YOu have to know when to quit on things.

Yes, but instant gratification can be so fleetingly wonderful!

It will not last ;)

I agree!! But we need to balance it out hehe :)

Thats why they make this:

For Business & those that like to PARTY ;)

OMG Love this shirt :) I wish I came up with the idea ;)

actually...after waiting for a looooong time...a sudden change is...an instant gratification...no matter how long or short the time is...it is always a sudden *instant" moment of joy, euphoria that we get like an adrenaline rush...what am afraid you are talking about is easy money which is what most people like to dream about..the only problem is, like kaylinart mentioned, the lack of PLANNING behind it all and not only that but also not putting the planning, wether it is art, writing, traveling, etc., ABOVE money is by far the biggest reasons for unsuccess...remember that steemit is about people it is not an ATM machine or your parent's saving or hereditary :]

omg I just noticed it was you aggroed :D ...hope you "aggroed" with me... :D

A study was done with a bunch of children. In the study the children were told you can have one marshmallow now or to later. The majority of the children took the one marshmallow now. 15 years later they interview the same group of children and to no surprise saw the children that had the better relationships and family lives had the ability to postpone gratification even as a little child.

I see this same pattern in steemit those that are always pulling all of the steem power out of their steemit account rater than waiting to grow and become a successful contributer to the community. Keeping in mind some people like yourself that have the pleasure of blogging on steem full tine need to pull form the rewards they receive.
Best,
Isaac

I heard that story! I love it!

Right? A lot of people are like that. I pull out some here and there to assist with things, But most of it stays put. I'm hoping the price will drop so I can buy more! I Hope this platform grows so we can reap the benefits of keeping things in there.

Amen to that!

thank you for your unfailing support I will do all I can to pay it forward I think we are both wanting to see the success of this community for the long term. I would buy more but I am already all in as far as crypto goes trying to go unbaked. Thinking about selling more of other alt coins to buy more steem if we do see a healthy dip.

I can very much relate to the picture with the guy 'mining for treasure' and does not give up. I have it myself and look at whenever I get the feeling of quitting. The thing is you only loose when you give up! So keep at it people!

These days it seems that most people want - even expect - instant gratification. I see it in my kids too. Good things take time I say ...

Great post - following

don t give up quotes Google Search.png

Right? That picture is one of my favorites! Sometimes it just takes a little bit more to get everything that you want.

Something to be said for delayed gratification! If it comes too easy most of the time for me it is not as sweet and valued. ;-)

Right? Exactly!

Delayed gratification is this one thing most of us know we should be doing... but then this little devil comes inside us and messes everything up :D Very nice post. :)

Right? I get crazy about that too! I get overwhelmed with impatience and want to start making demands which is a dumb move.

Yes this is true, that being patient reaps rewards. I kept going with my business for over 10 years now, and meantime have seen many others who left the industry to find other jobs. Though I would like to add that for those who are just starting out in their business, it is better to keep their day job and work on the business at the same time, and until the business picks up then they can quit their day job to focus more on their business. This will take away the anxiety of stability for them during the transition from working for someone to being self employed.

Daddy I want it NOW!

Your picture is beautiful and your article was fun to read. Keep posting stuff!!

This article is very very interesting. I love every bit of it. Inpatient is the order of the day. Money people don't want to wait longer for anything. They want to be rich overnight. When they see those that are successful, they will want to be like them , but they are not ready to put the kind of time and energy the person put in before getting to that level. Patient is one of the virtues that is hard to find in today's world. Nice article. Upvoted.

Awesome and absolutely right. In other words, people aren't consistent with what they are doing. They want immediate results and rewards which is not guaranteed in every case!

You nailed it, instant results do not come to those who succeed, you plan it and follow the plan till you achieve it! Going to share this out to folks so maybe they will get it...Never ever give up...

Exactly! Thank you :)

Exactly! Thank you :)

Awesome facts about life.
I need to do a rethink, and plan my life correctly.
You are an inspiration to New stemite like me. Am glad i followed you.
Thank you.

This article makes so much sense, thank you.

I guess it has much to do with expectations, and not wanting to waste time, if th gratification is somewhat guaranteed, most would not have problem with delayed gratification.

Delayed gratifcation is far more better than instant gratifaction as it allows the mind to resonate and grow information before the reward is attained. Delayed gratifaction allows individuals to learn values E.g

A girl born hot is less likely to have an amazing and diverse, humble personality than one who did not receive instant gratification such as attention from fellas, therefore invested in her personal growth. (I am not generalizing )

Delayed gratification is largely more rewarding than instant!

It's true, we live in a hurry. But in my country (Venezuela) I can queue up to 8 hours to buy food, to endure the wait I take a good book to read.

I love this blog and im definitely going to resteem it. You make some valid points with this post. I love the way you narrated this along with the perfect pictures to give the description. Thanks i need this information.

Excellent post @kaylinart! The sad thing about many who decide to "try" self-employment is that they actually often have good and viable ideas and plans... but they just quit too soon.

Sure, there are some who just have ridiculous expectations (Mercedes'es and mansions after six months) ... but in many cases people just think what we do is "easier" than it really is... patience and perseverance are possibly THE most important qualities for successful self-employment.

Nice post with useful article..I think You have good commiunication skills and strongest written skill....great work @kaylinart wel done sir...I think you are one of better people in this platform...nice...keep it up sir..GOD BLESS YOU..Resteemed

Great post I think its good that most people dont have what it take to do shit. I used to feel sorry for all the sleepy mouth breathers but now I know most people cant cut it. They need to be told what to do. They will never be successful in anything that they do because they are unable.

Thank you for this post, it serves as a reminder to me. I have recently been trying to work from home doing online marketing, and it is not manifesting just yet. I quit my job due to not being capable of of doing it any further, and now I have to get a job to pay the bills. I thought I could get the work at home thing up and running faster but I was wrong. That does not mean I will quit trying, just that I have to work harder to achieve my goals. I like that I stumbled on to a post like this, no matter how long it takes I will make what I am planning a reality. Honestly the more people that quit, the easier it is for me to succeed. Not that I want anyone to fail, that is just a fact. My patient attitude will win the day!

Self-employment really is not for the faint-hearted. My husband quit his job to set up his own business about a year and a half ago. It was not bad the first year but this year since March, things are not looking too rosy. We have to work extra hard but even when we are down to our last dollar, we manage to get by. I have been self-employed since my daughter was born - that was 7 years ago. It was good the first 3 years and I had another child in 2013. Things got tougher because I had to take care of 2 young ones under 5 at that time. But I didn't stop persevere. When my son was about 1 year old I started to produce coloring books and never stop drawing. We are still struggling financially but what I am trying to say is that never stop persevering regardless what you do.

Wow a a very nice post, actually it has something to do with discipline and consistency during your childhood days that is why it is essential to teach a child as early as you can the word "patience" because when you are able to teach that to your child everything else will follow not onlyin their later life they will get to benefit what you instill in them ....we all need discipline to be able achieve all the fundamentals and it is best thaught during the early years of childhood.

Gals and guys, this is a direct referrence to the Steem Power Down system. Steem teaches you patience in the same way OP does.

Some things just don't happen quickly, like growing you Steemit followers. There's some satisfaction to be taken though in those things that don't offer the instant dopomene hit. Following.

Great article K. You definitely have to know where you're going.

Hello @kaylinart,
You inspire me to be a better writer. You are so creative, how do you get your ideas?

That's why l believe that good things come to those who plan , work hard , have patience and don't give up. I lot of people do right before the door of opportunity opens.

Maybe I have an old school mindset, but a little delayed gratification makes people appreciate things more when they see/get/have it.

Thanks so much for this kick a$$ post! I mean it I like your writing and I think this subject in particular is so damn important. I have my own digital property that I'm trying to turn into a success so I don't have to sit and work anymore because ya know it sucks. So lately I've been having tons of synchronicities & breakthroughs since I've been at it for 6 months now. So, although I'm not there yet I can almost see the victory if I keep going. I know now where it needs to be and I'm breaking it down into small pieces of just exactly how I can get it there. I ask myself, "Hey, what is this thing going to look like after 6 more months? Could I open a nice present for myself in December for all my hard work?"

Nice article @kaylinart
I will learn from you ..

Beautiful one !
You always comes with beautiful post !
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Really enjoyed your every lines !

One thing I've understood in life is; it is the choices we make that define who we really are. And everyday, we're presented with opportunities to make choices. The option to wait and persevere is really a tough choice to make, but it will ultimately pay in the end.
Nice post @kaylinart, upvoted and followed ya

Intelligence & Experience speaks!! Cant blame people, I am really positive today about this website and my blog and I understand, god forbid, I think otherwise, there could be chances I may feel low, some people keep up & some dont! I just pray that He gives me the strength to keep up! That is all I gotta say! Anyways do check my latest post, first time the response is better than my other posts, people may laugh, but for me its a great deal lol

The world right now runs on instant gratification. Kids these days are so desperate for instant gratification that they are doing weird stuff to get noticed.

The other day a girl let her sister die and live streamed they accident on Instagram.

I wish someone like you will come up and teach these kids something about delayed gratification.

And I completely agree that people who want to start their businesses and get self-employed do not have the patience to work hard and wait till they see the results. People start their blogs or youtube channels and want to earn money the moment they upload their video.

The situation is too bad, and I think you are doing the really great job at teaching people how to accept delayed gratification and how to plan their goals.

P.S: I post stuff on How to Become a Writer and make money with Steemit, please take a look at it.

Thank you.

Working on this right now!

I also find that it's important to build up gratification, learn to appreciate multiple facets of your work and not just a result. It's similar to a relationship in the sense that you can't approach it with end game in mind, you have to work at it, enjoy and sometimes labor through the process and eventually you have this spectacular and very real thing. High fives for all the hard work! -M

Amazing post! Great things take time to happen! Theres no elevator to success! You have to take the stairs, hence why most people give up quickly. Was nice reading you. Keep up the great work @kaylinart ! xoxo

Rome was not built in a day...nor will our success.
