Dear rape victim,speak up! justice can be gotten for what happened to you!

Do you know that more than 80% of rape incidents go unreported? This is probably because the rape victims do not believe that their attackers can be brought to justice as stated by Justice Roberts, co-founder of Mumsnet.

What is Rape?
Rape is any form of sexual penetration on a person without the person's consent. The act of rape may also be carried out on a person who is unconscious,incapacitated, below the legal age of consent.

Why do men resort to raping women?
A lot of reasons can explain why men resort to raping women, but a few are;
1)Inability to handle rejection from women properly
2)psychological disorders
3)The need to feel superior to women.

What are the possible effects of rape?
Rape has both physical and psychological effects.
The physical effects of rape include:
1)Painful penetration
2)Vagina Infection
3)Sexual transmitted diseases such as HIV
4)Unwanted pregnancy

The most severe psychological effect of rape is posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

PTSD is a mental disorder that comes after a person is exposed to a traumatic event such as rape. Symptoms of PTSD includes depression, fear and anxiety, memories of the rape scene as if it is happening again which can cause the rape victim to feel used, guilty and have a low self-esteem. Symptoms of PTSD if not controlled can cause the victim to commit sucide.

Knowing all these stigma associated with rape, its so unfair to the victim if the rape incident is not reported. The rape victim is left to deal with posttraumatic stress disorder alone and at the same time, no justice is gotten for what happened to her. Rape victims are supposed to go through a rape therapy session which includes medications and counselling stages which helps to facilitate their recovery from the stigma. In some counselling stages, rape victims are taught that fear is a normal response to trauma and are taught how to control their fears.

Now if more than 80% of rape incidents go unreported, then there is serious need for resensitization on this rape issue. The female folk should be made to understand that they can deal with their fears and speak up after a rape incident, they should also be made to understand that their attackers can be brought to justice. They need to be taught that they can recover from the stigma associated with rape. Our male folk should be taught to redefine masculinity and that real men do not rape.
