Researchers at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland say they have created contact lenses capable of emitting lasers. The researchers in question created ultra-thin lenses from a conductive organic polymer that emitted a green laser when applied to the eyes of a cow.
In a conversation with Digital Trends, one of the makers of the project, Malte Gather, pointed out that the team started the project when a journalist joked that a way of launching lasers would be created, just as it is with comic book heroes like X Cyclops -Men. At the time the team was investigating whether biological systems were capable of generating lasers.
"In practice, this [capability] would be a convenient way of access control and authentication - one would have a device that would do a biometric analysis of the iris and another in a parelle that would be able to read wavelengths of light emitted by a laser used by the same person, "explained Galther.
