Haunted Forest

in #life8 years ago (edited)

About a mile from house there's a forest that's feels haunted. Just walking around, you get a creepy feeling like someone is watching you. It sends a shiver down my back every time I get near this forest.

As you look deeper, you start to see things. One thing I noticed, there are no field stones or branches laying around... which is really weird for New England. It appears that someone has cleaned a huge area of the forest by removing all the stones and branches and placed them into HUGE piles. This cleaned section spans a wide area of the forest in a huge square about a 1/2 mile on each side. You can see two of the large piles below.

Old Tiny House

There appears to a stone foundation of a tiny house. The foundation is a small rectangle of very large stones. The small rectangle measures about 20' x 15'. It is made of large stones only (no mortar) and appears to be a shallow basement about 4' deep. There appears to be an opening facing East. I'm assuming this is where a door once stood. This is also the way they used to build home foundations many years ago. So, I'm assuming this abandoned home is around 100-200 years old.

Old Abandoned Well

About 200' away from the tiny house is an old abandoned well. It is also made of only large stones (no mortar). This is also the way they used to build wells many years ago. So, I'm assuming this well is also around 100-200 years old.

Mysterious Wood Huts

Like something out of the "Blair Witch Project", there are a bunch of huts made of only branches. It appears someone has tried to camp in this area by making some crude shelters out of branches. Not sure if they are boy-scouts or serial killers. But this is just weird! Don't you think??

Freaky Stone Structures

There are also some weird stone structures. I'm assuming this is where all the field stones went. I'm not sure if these are ancient burial sites or just stone artwork.

Weird Deformed Trees

All the trees in this area are strange. The have branches all the way to the ground and many of them have really weird shapes and deformities like the tree in the "Poltergeist" movie. Usually trees in an old forest have lost all of their lower branches. So, this suggests that this entire forest may have been a large farm field at one time in the distant past.

OOooh I love those trees, just amazing! And the tiny house rubble is really cool to see. The huts and such make me think more that maybe there's a survival training class, people "rewilding" or something that goes on out there.

WHOAH!!!! Very haunted! Even from here I can feel it! :-O Xo

This was really fantastic! I can identify with you because I actually grew up not far from woods that had, let's say, a "blurry" history.

I was born and brought up in Smithfield, Rhode Island. My family had purchased a blot of land directly adjacent to a large wooded area that we simply referred to as "the back."

This area was actually marked by the local historical society and even had a cemetery with some of the stones dating back to the mid to late 1700's. It was actually the "Smith" family cemetery. More than likely these were people who were related to the folks that gave their name to the town.

In my early teens I decided to visit the local public library and do a little research. I found quite a bit of material and learned that in those woods there was once a settlement called Hanton City, and the main industry of this town was mining granite. In fact, much of the granite used to build early sidewalks and roads across the state came from this town.

I decided to further my research by doing some exploring. I found lots of remnants of an old settlement, such as cellar holes, open wells, rock walls, and even some old artifacts such as spoons, knives, lanterns, and even a couple of horseshoes.

Sounds quite normal so far, right? Well, here's where it gets creepy. At some point in the mid 1800's, the settlement just ceased to exist. There were reports of people visiting the settlement and finding the entire town dead, and many people completely missing.

There were several theories put out there in an effort to explain what happened. Some people claimed it was a plague. Others claimed they were attacked by Native Americans. Some say they were attacked by outlaws and robbed. Supposedly there was quite a bit of money and gold in the town as they had a very lucrative business.

Nobody really knows, but I can tell you that when you are up there a very eerie feeling comes over you. It's not really something that you can put into words, but it's like you are being watched. It just makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up!
