What is it?

Now, this item is successfully used as a shelf for books and looks very natural together with old photographs.

But what is its original purpose? This is a question :D

My first thought is that it is a machine for spinning linen.
But, having looked narrowly I thought that for pressing the linen the handle at the machine is not durable.
Therefore, the second thought came: can it be for making pita bread?
