He was born in the small village of Kostiuk near the Russian city of Vitebsk on 18 June 1878.
When he was 14 years old, he was about two meters tall. His father had to lift the roof of the house. He had a private bed. The clothes and shoes were especially designed for this giant boy, which required more money at the expense of the rest of the family.

The rural teacher, Yevrosinia Lipidiva, was married about one meter shorter. Nine months later, their daughter Maria was born. Another year later their son Nikolai was born.

He died in 1912 at the age of 34 years. The cause of death was not determined. According to some sources, he died of tuberculosis. Some people said he died of chronic pneumonia.
