Buildings and cities have always fascinated me.
A slight sense of excitement always overtakes me when I approach a city. The moment the skyline comes into view my eyes are transfixed, taking in every possible detail and I start to wonder...
"What is life like between those buildings?"
Cities are vibrant and full of energy, yet when viewed from afar they appear calm. Your eyes see its structures, but your mind is left to tell the stories about what might be occurring at street level amidst the high-rises. This is perhaps the most interesting aspect of any skyline because the stories we tell are very much unique to the individual and even the moment in time. Regardless of the narrative, our mind has a strong urge to fill in the gaps in our stories and thus the city has a magnetic-like attraction that pulls us in.
Buildings
Nothing influences our stories more than the buildings in a city and for me personally nothing is more intriguing than the supertall. For fun I have created a city diagram of Steemopolis, an imaginary megacity comprised of the world's 30 tallest urban structures. All building diagrams are from Skyscraper Page which is a really cool website if you are not familiar with it. Each of these buildings dominates its home skyline; however, it is interesting that when viewed together in one single skyline the impressiveness of each is diminished.
So what stories do you see when you look at Steemopolis?
