Is it supposed to be a world of competition???

in #life7 years ago (edited)

Why do we feel a need to constantly measure our success by that of other people? why do we always compare ourselves with other? Why is the heart of man so competitive? Some people are not happy with their car, income, etc, not because it is bad, but because it is not as good as the one the person they are comparing themselves to owns.

Some people who were so excited to make $5 a day on ptc sites, come to steemit and they get upset with $10 per day. The truth is, $10 is not the problem. They got upset because they saw some top steemians making over $1,000 from a single post. The heart of man is obsessed with competition. But what could be the reason for that? I'll share my observations with you here.

First things first, let's start with the definition of competition.

What is competition?

The activity or condition of striving to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others.  Source.

Why do people always compete with others?

The fact is, the business you have someone else is working hard to pull it down. Even your wife, someone else might want to have her. The job you have, someone wants it. All these glaring issues would make some people argue that life is a competition and it's self-deceit to think otherwise.

But why all that? Is it supposed to be about being a step ahead of others? Or is it supposed to be about being better than you were yesterday? What exactly is the real reason why people are so obsessed with competition?

Here are some reasons why people struggle fiercely to establish a step ahead of others.

  • Fear
  • The intention to establish influence or authority over events and other people.
  • Pride.

Fear

Man has always taken advantage of people he is better than. It is true that when someone has some influence over you, he tries to make you live by his own principles and beliefs. It's either he does it forcefully, or he establishes it in a more subtle way. Sometimes, people will only offer you help when you agree to abide by their own laid down principles which could be clashing with your beliefs and life goals.

Someone could be competing to be a step ahead just to protect himself from living a life controlled by others. That is fear. The fear that someone more influential or powerful could subject him to something he doesn't want. It could be the fear of someone else taking over his woman, confiscating his properties, etc.

The intention to establish influence or authority over events and other people.

While some people are constantly competing to protect themselves from external influence, others want to be ahead so they would easily enforce this influence on others. The reason someone wants to be richer or more powerful could be so he would take your wife, enforce his beliefs on you or subject you to other forms of torture.

Pride

People could be competing to overtake others for the sole purpose of receiving praise, respect or worship from others. They want to be praised as the best. The underlying factor here is pride.

Conclusion

Focus on the value that you add, not on how much better you are compared to someone else......  Darius Foroux.

I don't see a need to compete with anybody. I don't measure my success by another person's achievements. I have decided to exclude myself from the rat race. There would be no wars. No need for jealousy and envy and the world would be a better place if man stops predating on his fellow man and cease this incessant quest to be better or more powerful than others. The world is big enough to accommodate all of us. When people learn to live by their dreams, beliefs and principles, and not enforce it on others, then the obsession with competition would end.

I believe It is not supposed to be a world of competition.

What's your opinion on this? Is it healthy to always compete with others?

Sort:

That's so true. As "Comparison is the thief of joy", we should stop compete with others and focus on what we already have, discover the inner beauty and uniqueness in ourselves, not being blinded by some stupid and useless pride

Thank you.

yeah :-)

Shine on :-)

so to speak

Thank you.

Have you hear the saying 'Don't burn your hut looking at the big bungalows' there is more to it but that is human nature in modern society that they want what others have. It is not enough what is in there hand. I liked your post. Thank you for sharing. I also am waiting for my turn to hit 😊

That's true. Thank you for this.

I wish the world was dominated and dictated by competitiveness.
This definitely was an interesting read
Thanks for the post.

You are welcome. Thanks for your comment here.

Great article thanks. I think at the core most people compete because of an unconscious fear of inadequacy, not being "enough." Other then that I think sane competition is ok, and being happy for or inspired by other's people achievement is a part of evolution. :)

Thanks for your comment. To be inspired by other people's achievements is a good thing. But it turns bad when we start competing with them as regards to who is better.

@ogoowinner Totally agree, it's about living your truth, not focusing on what others are doing! Have a great sunday 🙏🏼

vicious competition can only hurt people themselves

Thanks for this contribution.

Absolutely right!

Thank you.

@ogoowinner great post keep it up

Thank you.

Thank you.

Welcome buddy

There is one person I compete with, and that is myself, am I happy with that I have done? Or can I do more?

No. You've chosen the right path to happiness.

It helps when you don't really care what other people think.

That's true.

Thanks for this post. I do feel like I've failed whenever I compare with those at the top. I guess everything has its time.

That's true. Everything has its own time. It's better we stopped comparing ourselves with others. Thanks for your comment here.

Wonderful piece of writing!
I personally believe that there is no need to compete with others it could only make you mentally sick. It could wash away all the sweetness of your heart. It could destroy the originality and uniqueness of your personality. The only thing we should do that is to try to become the better version of ourselves than we were yesterday.
Upvoted and resteemed!
Have a good day :)))

Thanks so much for the Upvote and resteem.

What the reason why people struggle...? This is the question so interest for me. Great article...

Thank you.

I love the first picture so much. It says it all.
Many people are like figures moving in no actual direction. This is because in their bid to be like others, they try to live like others.
Competition can breed success but when it becomes part of a human life it breeds jealously, envy and endless comparison. These things are not healthy.

Whenever we try to be like another person, we loose out on who we truly are. Thanks for this comment.

I love this, your only competition is tomorrow!

Great Content, following.

Thank you.

While some people choose path of fast burning rabbit, I found my pace of long living turtle 🐢 😉

Wow! I love this statement. Thanks for your comment here.

Your are correct @ogoowinner, we cannot compte with the other for their achievement. Its better to look at them as motivation.

That's the point. When we see them as motivation, it is a good thing. It becomes unhealthy if we try to compete with them. Thanks for your comment.

this is so true. And no, absolutely not. Being competitive may be good, but only to improve your creativity and the resources you use to create projects of interest. But when you start to compete in all aspects of life, it becomes something harmful. You fall into depression, lack confidence in yourself and that creates unhappiness. You have to be careful, excesses are bad. Excellent reflection! Keep writing more about it, I like your point of view. I follow you.
