Self-Improvement#1: Everything about goals!

in #life9 years ago

Everybody knows: Somehow goals are important. But it seems that no one really knows what goals are and also no one seems to know why they are important. I´ll try to explain these reasons and set them in context to Steemit.

Let´s do some definitions first:

No goals are:

1. One day I will start to learn an instrument.
2. I´d like to be a millionaire.
3. I want 1000 followers on Steemit.

Goals are:

1. Tomorrow after work, I am going to buy a guitar. I´ll practice for half an hour each day and will be able to play Francisco Tarrega´s "Cappricio Arabe" for my father's next birthday in April without making a mistake.

2. In exactly 5 years from now, the 24th September 2021, I will have 1.000.000 $ available on my 8 wallets and bank accounts. I will earn this money starting with my 500$ of earnings and investing in Cryptocurrencies. Also I will work as xyz and I will need 1100 $ per month to keep me alive in a normal way. This means I have additionally 257 $ to invest and economize per month. I will learn xyz and read book 1 2 3 ...

3. I have 103 followers today after 15 quality posts and 10 troll posts (meme + 1 sentence). This shows me an average of 4 new followers per post. For my quality posts I get a better average of new followers. Following this observation I have to provide 1 quality + 1 troll posts per day to reach my goal of 1000 followers by X-Mas 2017. I will blog about x y z as main topics.

If you don´t see the real difference, here it is:

A goal is defined as exactly as possible.

It has a precise deadline it is measurable and you have to be aware of what you have to do to reach it. It is not really important if the goal seems reachable to others, it must be plausible to YOU.

An old saying about goals is: There are no unrealistic goals, only unrealistic deadlines.

Let´s see how to get to a "good" and "real" goal:

There are numerous step by step guides available in the web and in books. The most effective I found was written by Brian Tracy in his Book "No excuses"  there he defined 7 Steps how to reach a goal.
I´ll try to sum them up for you very shortly:

1. Decide exactly what your goal is. Be as precise as you can be.
2. Write it down.
3. Set a deadline.
4. Write down a list of every step you have to take to reach your goal. This includes to identify everything that could stand in your way and what you´ll have to learn.
5. Set priorities and a timeline to your to-do list.
6. Start immediately and work as often and as hard as possible on your priorities.
7. Do at least SOMETHING even if it is only a tiny step EACH DAY to get closer to your goal.

Now you know, what a goal is, and how to set a real goal...

Here comes the reason why "real" goals are so important and why they will help you greatly to be more happy:

Humans are "deciding machines". All the time you are making decisions based on what your interests and actual needs are, based on your experiences and based on what society demands from you.
By setting a goal, you can check each decision you take, whether the decision is bringing you a step further to your goal or not (this is mainly a subconscious process).
It´s one of the greatest, satisfying feelings you can get, looking back to a day's work and the decisions taken this day and to see that you came yet another step closer to a set goal.  This satisfaction is a result of the regained control over your life. Even if there are obstacles and time consuming duties.
Your brain will know that there IS a direction and it will soon for you become a conscious habit to check your decisions for this direction.
There may be sometimes reasons NOT to decide for your goals, and that is completely OK, but still you will know that there are reasons and which exactly those reasons are. (e.g. if you have to help a friend and this collides with your goals... perfectly OK. But if there is no such "good" reason, you will feel instantly and instinctively that you have to make a better decision the next time).

One last thing you have to know: There are only 3 persons out of 100 who sit down and do as I explained. These are also the persons having success and finding happiness! Think about that for a second...

And now:  Sit down, decide what you want, precise it, write it down, etc...
get going, get happy and successful!
