When at Sea…

Once as per the Scottich law, the fishermen required to wear a gold earring, which was used to pay for funeral expenses if they drowned and washed ashore.

Legend has it that an umberall aboard ship is unlucky

During the early days of British Navy, cannons were fired from warships as a greeting. Since the cannons could not be quickly reloaded, firing a gun in salute told receivers of the greeting that the firers had disarmed themselves and could do no harm The largest ships of the fleet had twenty one guns on each side, so a twenty-one gun salute was a sign of the gratest respect.

“What the sea wants, the sea will have,” was a saying in the British Isles. This meant that if a sailor was meant to drown, nothing could prevent it. Thus, few sailors of the past ever learned swim.
