Why It Is Important To Be Decisive In Life

I was watching a video of Mark Cuban the other day in which he was talking about his everyday routine. For those of you who don't know, he is a billionaire with an estimated net worth of around $3.9 billion.

As such, I had hoped that most of his time would be spent in offices and with his managers and such, but I was shocked to know that he spends most of his time answering emails, reading books, playing basketball and showering. Yes, he showers 3 times a day!

But that is not the main thing here. They key thing that I took away from the video was the power of being decisive in life. Of course not everyone can spend time like Mark because not everyone is a billionaire and we got to work at a job or a business, but decisiveness is still a key factor in everyone's lives.

Basically, when Mark said that he answers hundreds of emails a day, that's when I realised the importance of this key trait. He is constantly being pitched business ideas, proposals, other business related formalities and requests, and he has to quickly deal with each of them. That's where decisiveness comes into play.

Being Decisive In The Modern World

This trait becomes even more important in the modern day world where there are too many distractions and noise at every moment. Plus there are lot more opportunities today than say, some 100 years ago. So, it can get really confusing.

If we spend most of the time dwelling on things, more often than not, we will not be able to make decisions in time. Time is another key aspect here. The scarcity of time and the increased competition around us makes it really important that we respect it immensely.

Thus, being able to take decisions on the fly becomes a really handy ability in our world today. Not only does it matter on the more important things in life, it is important even for the little things.

It is only after we decide, that we are able to take actions. And actions determine success. So the faster you can get into execution mode, the faster you are going to get to that finish line.

Thoughtful Not Hasty

Often times people can relate being decisive with being hasty and would rather be more comfortable with more data in hand to make more informed of a choice. But there might not always be the time or the opportunity to gather that info.

Hence, it is critical to know what amount of information is just enough to make the decision while at the same time not being too hasty just for the sake of making a decision.

Striking a balance and remaining thoughtful is important. For people like Mark it is more so because one single email could have consequences in the millions of dollars.

This is something even I am learning to do more as I apparently waste too much time just thinking on a particular subject as the perfectionist inside me just won't advance to the next steps. But I realise the importance and am hoping to implement it asap!

it is critical to know what amount of information is just enough to make the decision

The above line is key to being decisive. We have to be able to distinguish between important information that will aid our decisiveness and those that won't. Sometimes we just want to know every minute detail before we make a decision. This approach is very time wasting and may lead to procrastination.

Once the basic things about the idea or project is known, let's go ahead and make our decision because the more time we waste, the more everything would seem complicated.

Nice piece and thanks for sharing

Yeah, that's exactly right! Dwelling over every possible minute detail will cause one to procrastinate and delay the execution mode. So, we should just try to make sure that we have just the right amount of info to go ahead.

The decision is related to the amount of information taken
