As far as my knowledge goes, UE and US is backing from wind energy. Some reasons they gave:
-overall cost of generating energy (per kwh)
-ground vibrations and noise (Wind Turbine Syndrome)
-lowering the value of the landscape

and others (like birds issues that you mentioned)
Those reasons have some science backup, but still need research.

I personally would say it's interesting way of generating energy, but that's it.
