I have read before that people tend to have a "baseline" level of happiness that isn't really changed by external events - which would suggest that happiness IS an internal psychological structure as you say, not something that can be given or bought. It's much more difficult to change the composition of your psychological structure than it is to buy a shiny new toy or meet someone new, though. It's easy to get lost in the allure of a chase instead of taking a deep-dive internally.

It's very true. Facing your nemesis-demon in the fiery pits of the subconscious underworld takes guts of steel. Buying something nice takes very little thought at all :)
