While I had my clinical rotations in the National Institute of Mental Health, Sri Lanka as a medical student, I came across this painting done by a psychiatric patient and these few lines written below..
How many times must have they been silenced when they spoke of a world only they could perceive, but others failed to understand.. How many times must have they been asked to straighten up their attitudes when they were screaming about their helplessness in getting hold of their emotions.. How many times must have they been asked to go hide when they spoke of desires at which the others shied away..
It's schizophrenia, it's depression, it's bipolar affective disorder... It's the same as you and I having diabetes or a common cold.. They are not to be silenced, they are to be listened to, and cured..
Because you'll never know, the next moment it could be you.. And would you let them steal your voice then?
