In our world of selfie filters and curated social media accounts, those of you who have peered at life outside the proverbial “fish bowl” might wonder what has happened to values like class and grace. The strength of one’s character, nowadays, is often mistakenly measured by beard size and adherences to other trends in fashion. Hexagram 22, reminds us that our ancient ancestors placed higher value in the contents of the container.

Speaks to that which seeks mastery in one’s craft, the I Ching reminds us of the wisdom realized through secret cultivation. It is these moments of solitary dedication, that we become aware of the inner processes that contribute to the aroma emitted by one who is illuminated by a connection to the Ultimate. By avoiding any vain displays of beauty or intellectualism, trouble can be avoided.

The resulting hexagram, Ta Ch’u, warns that integrity will be tested at every opportunity. It might seem natural seek out some form of asylum from the potential gauntlet that awaits. But that is not how greatness is cultivated. The work of nurturing the spirit and connection to superior mind states, is essentially the process of staying centred despite any opposition. The inner fire can burn bright and strong, while the omitted energy can adjust to the circumstances moment to moment. By cultivating the subtle art of internal awareness, you will remain unshaken by even the most disruptive forces.
