Finding work in the community

The two events I’ve been working on the past month are finally taking form. I’m trying to create events that forge community but also allow me to earn money, and even to do it with a pay-what-you-want system. I don’t plan to stay here very long, it’s more of a transition period so I only have 2-3 month to build them, which is not much. It’s kind of a shame to leave them behind but I know I can recreate them again in the future.

One is Japanese language class that breaks all the rules of a class and the other a weekly performance that breaks all the rules of performance.

The Japanese class today was really nice. Pay-what-you-want may not have worked out in my personal benefit but the low pressure is nice and I somehow managed to gather a very passionate bunch who really want to learn and also share ideas peacefully. It’s also an opportunity to spread the pay-what-you-want culture. I hope that one day more people can give more Generously and think about giving more money to support the people in their community than chain restaurants and convenience stores and everything else.

After class we ate and talked about community and the state of the world. Their cultural bubbles so incredibly diverse, and yet they all talked to each other as if they knew each other for months. I don’t think any of them realized just how different they were from each other. It was nice in a way, but there is certainly some culture shock going on between the art world and business world, the radicals and conservatives. get along though!

We are building bridges!

What was the difference, what broke all the rules?

The "pay what you want" rule is only one, not all.

がんばって!

Oh japanese language. I am japanese.
