It doesn't matter on what side of the aisle the politics of Steemians lie when it comes to the upcoming midterm elections, which are to take place on November 6, 2018.

At least, it doesn't matter if you are left, right, or somewhere in the middle (or completely undefined) when it comes to the information in this post.

That's because, my friends, this is simply a public service announcement. If you don't know how to register vote … this post is for you.

Now, this is something that's relatively basic. However, according to statistics from 2014 (the latest year for which numbers are available) from the Pew Research Center, " a conservative estimate, calculated using data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s most recent Voting and Registration Supplement, indicates that 21.4 percent were not registered to vote in 2014." And why, you might ask?

Because either they lack interest or they simply have had no one reach out to them, in order to show them how to register to vote.

This post then, is an effort to reach out to the Steem Community, to speak to those who have not yet registered to vote … but who may want to.

There are Five Things Everyone Should Keep in Mind

  1. The rules for voting are different in every state. It's therefore super important for you to contact your state's local election office. You can do that by heading over to the U.S. Government's breakdown of local offices at:

State Level Voting Offices

  1. Voter ID laws are also different in every state. You can find a list of voter ID requirements here:

Show Me the Voter ID Laws of My State

Remember the following!

You have to be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, a resident of the state in which you reside, and you have to register to vote BEFORE your local deadline (contact the people you need to speak with in step one above). Interestingly, North Dakota does NOT require voter registration.

If you have ever been convicted of a felony you may NOT be eligible to register to vote. However, the rules concerning this are different in every state. Contact your local voting office to ask about this if it's an issue for you.

  1. If you are out of state, or out of the United States, you may still be able to register to vote, and you can get an absentee ballot. Check with your local voting office for details.

  2. If you're in any branch of the U.S. military, you can contact the Federal Voting Assistance Program in order to register to vote, and to get an absentee ballot if necessary.

  3. If you know someone who is a U.S. citizen, but they DON'T speak English and you would like to help them register to vote, and to actually vote … you can get a hold of a voter's guide, which is available in the following languages: Cherokee, Chinese, Dakota, Japanese, Korean, Navajo, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Yupik. If you feel that the upcoming elections are important in any way, and you'd like to exercise your right to vote as an American, don't hesitate to get in touch with your local voting office right away!
