Minimalism: Living Deliberately

Exploring Minimalism

This morning I had the opportunity to explore Matt D'Avella's 2016 documentary Minimalism. It is a brilliant film analyzing human consumption and inspiring people to strive towards a minimalist society.

But what exactly is this minimalism thing? Minimalism has grown beyond the art trend of the late 1960s into the concept of living deliberately: each item, relationship, and action has a purpose. Of course not every minimalist follows this concept exactly. Each person can justify different purposes for different items, each person needs a different amount of space, each person explores minimalism in their own way.

How can I become a minimalist? Many people begin by ridding themselves of excess materials. This can include cleaning out their wardrobe (yes including that shoe collection), downsizing to a smaller space, or simply consuming (purchasing) less.

Love people and use things... because the opposite never works.

I highly recommend this film to anyone. It's the first step in understanding what minimalism is and how you can work to implement it in your life. Not going to lie, I started decluttering immediately...

For those of you who are interested in watching the entirety of the documentary, I watched the film on Netflix. It is also available on YouTube for $3.99.

Thanks for reading!
